Other than cowbells and contentment in mediocrity, Mississippi State doesn't have much tradition.
What's ironic is this wet blanket attitude is probably our most enduring tradition

We have one cheer with barks but you don’t hear it much.
“WE GOT SOME DAWGS UP IN HERE!” -somebody
“Barking” -everybody else

re: What took rays so long to promote Jake Mangum

Jake Mangum was essentially our head coach while he was here. He played for Cohen, Cann, Henderson and Lemonis in his 4 years with a batting title, SEC hits record, 4 supers and 2 CWS.
There’s a story that Lemonis was speaking to the team before a big SEC series and he was talking about their ace and said something along the lines of
“This is why you come play in the SEC, to face pitchers like this.”
And Mangum said “Nah coach, he came to the SEC to pitch to me.”

That's the craziest stat imo. I mean 24 times you'd think you'd at least luck into 1 but nope.
The closest basketball analog is K-State with 12 Elite Eights and 4 Final Fours with no title.
Baseball is the hardest tournament to win, IMO. You have to be good, deep and lucky, all at the same time.

Is this easier to get to when they let the whole conference host or in the tournament?
Sure, you have to be in the tournament to win the tournament.
But even if they let 16 teams from a single conference in, and the 25% of the field from that single conference maintained an 86% hit rate for Finals appearances and championships over an extended period of time, I think you would have to agree that there is something different about that conference.

Just the way baseball goes, sometimes.
Lose one of your first two games and it’s hell getting out of the losers bracket, no matter who you are.

Also crazy to think about where the schools are located in the state and we still do numbers.
Jackson metro folks have to drive 1.5 - 2.5 hours to get to any games. DeSoto county folks are a bit closer to Oxford but it’s not next door.
Hattiesburg is the only one with a relatively large local population.

His resume on paper is good but what would give me pause as a State fan is he's a Paul Mainieri disciple. Similar philosophies and similar resumes. Mainieri had to have very talented teams to do well at LSU because he had a tendency to overcoach. O'Connor seems the same.
You're right, we should probably pull the offer.
Damn, thought we found the one.

It would be hard to be upset with Wasikowski or Fitzgerald.
Both have turned their respective programs around in a big way.

Who would bring the best pitching coach?
Could be wishful thinking, but some folks think O'Connor would hire Corey Muscara away from Wake Forest, which would be a massive get.

Exactly what State did with Arnett and we saw how that turned out.
Similar outcomes, for sure, but I feel like the timing of Leach’s death forced our hand on Arnett.
A&M had plenty of time and an athletic director to make this hire

This is why you don’t let players dictate coaching hires.
Just hire the best person you can and deal with the transfer/recruit attrition.

But the committee has never awarded one conference 6 or more national seeds, and there is a lot of speculation that they won’t do it this year.
They’ve also never seeded a 16-team SEC before this year. I think both are safe.
Doesn’t really matter all that much, everything’s gonna go haywire once the games start. State has hosted multiple supers after going on the road for regionals.
Hotter/looser team tends to trump home field advantage, IMO.

The one we have to make us tell us no is Brian O’Conner. He will probably use the offer to get a raise and more money for UVA baseball but have to start there
His contract extension from last summer is a head scratcher.
$1.4M a year through 2031 with only a $500,000 buyout.
Definitely makes it seem like he would leave UVA for the right gig.
