Late December, freezing cold Shreveport, 6-6 Alabama with an interim coach is gonna face 6-6 Oklahoma State.

Look at the stands, the stadium is completed packed with fans of both schools. People actually took their holidays and spent their money to travel and attend this game. Game is high energy and treated as though it were extremely vital.

If this exact situation occurred today the stadium would be 95% empty, the two "teams" that went out there would be almost all 3rd stringers and walk ons as any player even half worth a damn have already opted out or transferred.

But hey now the 24 year old players are multi millionaires which is what everyone wanted all along, right?

Yes, the guys who can barely read and write and couldn’t give less of a frick about the jock sniffers are wealthy at 18! Mission accomplished. We did it. No, a free opportunity for a college degree that they never would have been able to attain, free housing, the best strength and conditioning available, and tier 1 nutrition along with $100 handshakes and being treated like royalty across the campus and local businesses was oppressive. Congratulations to the morons who were for this bullshite.

It’s a trade off, you lose this, but you gain late season playoff games. Just to throw a potential example, say Ole Miss and Oklahoma are each 7-2 on Nov 14, that game becomes a lot more meaningful in 2026 as opposed to 2006. November now had a lot more nationally meaningful games.

All of those things could have been accomplished without NIL and the transfer portal

November rivalry games have been rendered damned near meaningless if one or both teams have a playoff spot wrapped up. Can you imagine the backlash if Cam Newton or Derrick Henry got injured in the Iron Bowl with a playoff berth already in hand? Congratulations, race-hustlers and do-gooders, you've destroyed what made college football great.

Which leads me to a question, just something I was curious about, what was the Alabama fan’s opinion of the 2017 iron bowl in February of 2018? Were y'all still mad/sad about it?

<3 Joe Kines

Awesome dude. Sounds like a broken foghorn, but he was a solid coach.

as an AU fan, it wasn’t nearly as meaningful to me as it would have been a few years earlier - i imagine it means as much to me now as Bama’s win over UGa during the regular season last year does to them

“braggin rights” used to be a thing, when you play teams more than once in a season it just means less

This fall, you will tune in to watch your dogs play. You will keep the same routine you have always kept I bet. You will start with game day. A Bloody Mary, maybe a double. Start the grill and smoke the chicken and ribs till 2. You will drink, yell at the tv, curse the refs like always. The wife will get annoyed and say she’s going off.

Ahhhh, college ball. Hasn’t changed a bit.

I get the very broad, high level, macro point you're making and it's not entirely without merit. But you're extremely wrong that things haven't changed.

Used to be I would know every number, hometown, and high school for every scholarship player. I followed these guys all through recruiting, spring practice, and fall camp. I felt like I was damn near part of the team and lived and died with every snap. Now? I barely know half the guys on the field in game 1. Don't really care where they came from since most transferred in and will probably only be here 1 year anyway. HAlf the guys are only here because of how much money they're paid anyway and the vast majority don't care half as much about UGA as I do.

So yes, I would argue that QUITE a bit has changed. Instead of being something that my entire year and life was based around now it's something that pops up for 4 hours on Saturdays before then going on about my day.

I’m glad I have hundreds of old LSU games recorded and saved on hard drives. I can recreate this in my own little bubble.

Couldn't agree more. I hate what we've lost in CFB. Last season was the first time in my life that I didn't watch several of our games. I plan to watch even less this season.
I hate the nfl and I'm losing my interest in CFB. I just want to go back to the New Years day bowl games and shitcan this playoff system.

I know I sound like a dinosaur. Maybe I am.
