I know it sits in Birmingham’s shite area - but from hosting Olympic events, the Iron Bowl and SEC championships to hosting HS football games and nothing else.

Legion Field has been in decline for years and years now. They condemned the upper deck back years ago and ended up tearing them down. It’s sad. That place has hosted a lot of big football games over the decades.

I have been in that area a lot the past couple of weeks but did not take the time to drive past it and look at the condition it’s in today. I’m glad Bama got out of that place though. I hated to have to park in some shady looking guys yard for way too long much money.

As much as LSU was dominated by Bama, the ‘82, ‘84, ‘86, ‘88 games were some of the most exciting wins in my childhood/ teen years. Great players for Bama, Bennett and Thomas defensive monsters. Bobby Humphrey running like crazy. There was plenty of good luck for LSU for some of those games.

Exactly like the bama football team, that stadium is quickly becoming a relic of the past.

UAB home games and the B’ham Bowl were all played at Legion Field until 4 or 5 years ago when Protective Stadium was opened. So Legion Field has had relevance in recent years which is far more than we can say about Tennessee Football. The Vols haven’t been relevant in a long time.

I saw my first ever Alabama game there. September 9, 2000, against Vanderbilt. I was 13 and had the time of my life.

Was there last Friday for the Helena Ramsey game. First time I had been back since Bama’s last game there in 03.
Still pretty much the same. Spent a good amount of time with a friend of mine talking about Bama games we grew up with there. Tuscaloosa wasn’t much. Legion was the place to be. Bama never said bye the right way. We were supposed to play a game there through 2008 but got out of the contract. I still believe we need one more game to say goodbye the right way. Crazy to believe Nick Saban is the first Bama coach to never coach a game in Legion since 1927.

Legion Field is a victim of location. It’s in one of the worst areas of Bham. I remember going there in 87 to see my first Iron Bowl, saw Pink Floyd there in 94. Went to Bham Bolts games there in 2001 and almost all of the Bham Bowls until they built Protective Stadium in Uptown. I have a lot of good memories there. But you couldn’t pay me go down there now.

I hated it when I went to Iron Bowls in the 1970’s and 80’s because it was always 80% bammers.

That nasty place will be better when it is destroyed. Sooner the better.

Absolute shite area. But I loved it. Parked in people’s yards and there a dude that sold ribs and bread there for years out of his grandmas house and they were the ribs I’ve ever had.

So did I, the Steel Wheels Tour, 1989. Living Colour opened for them. It was a great concert.

I thought I read awhile back that plans were set to reinvigorate that entire area.

What changed? That area has been that way for years and decades. I go to Rickwood 3/4 times a year. It struggles with the same issues but is still a special place.

My late uncle went to a few games at Ladd stadium too. He died in 2006 but saw the last Bama games in Mobile 1968, Montgomery 1954 and Birmingham in 2003.
