I hated it when I went to Iron Bowls in the 1970’s and 80’s because it was always 80% bammers.

That nasty place will be better when it is destroyed. Sooner the better.

Sad that you're so hateful towards the history of your own state, but then, that's Auburn for you. Most self-loathing, tryhard fanbase on the planet.

I thought I read awhile back that plans were set to reinvigorate that entire area.

they'd have a lot of work to do if they want to renovate that area

I went to a UAB game there; was not super impressed; but I'm sure a Bama game would have been a whole different story...

I went to so many games there, primarily Iron Bowls. I actually played on the field in the old Dental Clnic game. Like playing on concrete.

I actually toured this place in 2008 with a buddy from Columbus and a buddy from Phoenix City. I had no idea it was as bad as it was back then. I can’t even imagine it now.

This is not a shitpost. I love old stadiums and histories, that’s why we went. Sucks they can’t play now and more so back in 08.

Birmingham’s shite area

You sure about that?
From what I’ve read on this board, only Louisiana, specifically Baton Rouge, has “shite areas”

Similar to Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson. It was once a great college football venue that hosted numerous SEC football doubleheaders back in the 1970’s-1980’s.
Lots of great memories there and also of Legion Field. Their usefulness ended around 1990. Though Bama did continue to play in BHM through the 1990’s. State moved all home games to campus starting in 1991. Ole Miss followed suit a few years later.
Football is much better on campus in the present day.

Bama used to play all of the big home games on the schedule at Legion Field. Did it for years. I think they may have played a game or two around the state but that’s was way before my time.

BDS used to seat around 70 thousand people or a little more and had some of the worst looking artificial turf you would ever see. Legion Field seated 80 thousand plus. Most home games were played there for years. They didn’t really play at BDS that often.

That was my first Bama game as a freshman. One of three high points of a 3-8 year. Fantastic memories regardless.

It was the same with Auburn until we built Jordan-Hare up a little more and travel to Auburn became easier.

In fact Auburn used to play the lion’s share of our big games in either Legion Field or the Cramtom Bowl in Montgomery. Tennessee and Georgia Tech were very frequently played there.

It would take a lot of work. Just to give you an idea about the area and how bad it it my mom has been in the hospital the past couple of weeks not far from Legion Field. To go into that hospital you have to go through a metal detector. It’s the only hospital i can think of that I have ever had to walk through a metal detector to get in. I doubt they would bother with that if the area was a nice area. It’s a shame that hospital actually had some great nurses and good doctors. Mom was treated well there.

On the way to that hospital you have to pass the campus of the old Birmingham Southern College. They shut that college down a couple of years ago. The Coast Guard has taken the campus over and it’s now a Coast Guard Academy or something to do with the Coast Guard.

Not hateful towards history - I can remember the games just as well as the high crime, no campus feel and no parking.

The first year the game moved to the campus game model - it got so much better. You can enjoy the campus and enjoy the atmosphere.

Self loathing? I am far from that. I have zero negative thoughts about myself.

Go Vols.

I work there frequently especially at the adjacent Fresenius facility. Had tools stolen out of the back of the service truck lol.

It’s as damned shame because there’s good folks there. Just sort of socked in. People joke about the “watch yo’ car for yah” folks but the vast majority of them were good folks and would even offer food and beer before you walked into the stadium.

Last game I attended at Legion was Auburn vs Memphis about a decade ago. Was a good time, but it poured lol.
