Did the Texas player declare for the draft?

None of the players involved "declared" cause they were seniors and auto added to the draft. But none of them withdrew either.

So by the secs own rule, none of them should be eligible, but lsu is the problem.

If I remember correctly, it used to be if a player signed with an agent they could no longer play college ball.

Alabama has experience with this. The napkin contract.

How many college players have agents these days?

What if a player was on an NFL roster during games but never took the field for a snap? I'm sure a judge could play the semantics game and let him return to college football since he never played in an NFL game. Or what if a player only played one down of NFL football, surely he wasnt actually an NFL player since he only played one play. Its never going to stop now.

This is actually easily demarcation. Once you make a 53 or a ps after final cut down you earn time towards retirement and benefits from NFL. No one can say they weren't an NFL player at that point. Even if they were never active for game day

There are no amateurs anymore.

Just look at the Olympics, it's now full of professional athletes.

A lof of players in the SEC make more money than the SEC brass.

No one has been able to define what a former professional player is.

Can’t or won’t? The problem is that pre NIL it was very easy to define what a professional or former professional athlete was.

Do you truly understand the impact of a conference commissioner trying to thread the needle and defining “what is a professional athlete “ in open court would have? Put it this way, there are now tens of thousands of athletes in college making money through loosely connected collectives and other entities. Once you have a conference state on record in court the definition of a professional athlete, every single one of those athletes has a legal claim to being an employee of the school/ conference.

Do you understand the seismic impact that would have on college sports? Are you ready to welcome collective bargaining into college athletics because that’s the door LSU unwittingly tried to open yesterday.

Google is your friend. Two other schools, Oklahoma and South Carolina, signed players just like the Texas kid WHILE THE HEARING WAS HAPPENING.

Talk about having your head in the sand.

LSU won the battle but the war has yet to play out. I think they are at the high point currently and will be curious to see how this plays out.

The difference to me is him signing NFL contract. Versus some who went to mini camp. Look at a normal company hiring process as comparison.

Company extends offer to person. They sign a waiver to get drug tested and to run their driving record (if driving is required). This is mini camp comp only they go home in football and wait to see if called and offered. They fail drug test and are told they won’t be hired. They were never an employee.

Its been argued and everyone has their line in the sand. This has yet to fully play out. If LSU makes the bubble to be considered by playoff committee, they can just not pick them. To avoid legal they can just say it was merit which isn’t something to sue over. Just one example of so many future things that might come up.

I just want a clear line that when you sign NFL contract you are done with college. Not a mini camp injury waiver but NFL contract.

The NCAA and SEC attorneys had an even different view of what a professional is saying that anyone who decides to leave college knows that they were making a choice to be a professional and giving up their right to come back to college.

These guys didn't "decide to leave college ". They were kicked out because they were out of eligibility and then told months later "Woops! You have another year of eligibility after all."

Exactly. If you're saying Cole Hutson is eligible and not a pro but Harris is ineligible and a former pro, you've lost the narrative. "Contract" means nothing

Is he going to have to tell these two players they cannot play because the penalties that are coming to lsu are too severe? Dang that would be harsh and such a disaster for Kiffin. It’s a strong possibility
The sec is not giving in

Was the gas money that one player received from an NFL team a benefit? The problem is once you say some NFL affiliation is ok, the argument becomes how much NFL affiliation is too much, instead of just saying zero NFL financial affiliation is allowed like its always been. The line is going to constantly be debated and redrawn now.

I agree with this. However, with Sankey going on record in a court of law the way he did with some of his questions he weakened the SEC's position in all of this.

As many has already said, NIL has drastically changed the calculus for College athletics and both NCAA, SEC and other conferences are lost... The old way of thinking is just not going to apply to this new world and the old guard needs to catch up.

That’s the difference to you. The difference to me maybe something completely different. Thats why this is problematic, there’s no clear line in the sand.

And Sankey had a chance to define one yesterday and admitted he could not do so.

Maybe the reason no one wants to clearly define a "professional athlete" is because doing so would force them to admit what college sports has already become.

It’s a complete joke. Some of these QBs are making double what the New Orleans Saints starting qb is making but they aren’t ’professionals’?

If you are getting paid to play a game, you are a professional. Any level headed judge can see that. NCAA should let this go and stick to their you get 5 years to play after high school, no more, and go with that from now on.
