I had a hall of fame former major leaguer as a coach for a short while.

One thing that stuck with me was him saying that the nervous energy or butterflies that you feel before a big at bat, or big game are important because it means you care. Don't look at it as fear or anything negative but harness it and use it own the moment.

He said he felt the butterflies every time he ever took the mound, and knew that the second he didn't feel that anymore it was time to hang it up.

"Son, you probably would be better off taking up something else"....

Heard that from several coaches.

"You could be a really good receiver if you would grow about 6 inches, put on about 50 lbs and cut your 40 in half." (I could catch anything thrown my way in warm ups. I was small and slow).

"You guys suck!"

And we did, we had a lousy basketball team. None of us were any good.

So, I dropped out of basketball and took up Theater instead. Where I discovered that Catholic HS theater girls really, really love to "practice lines." I had a far more enjoyable time there.

I never played sports, but my chess coach was always riding my arse for bringing my queen out too early
