That must be why LSU has only had two decades in the 130 year history of LSU football that they had a winning record against Alabama in football. And why even if LSU won every single future Alabama/LSU game it would be 2057 before they tied the series at .500.

The only reason college sports currently exist is because of what it once was, not because of what it currently is.
It’s a legacy event where only the memory of how invested we once were and the fading hope that it’ll somehow be saved soon keeps us coming back to a sport that’s pretty much garbage due to uncontrolled NIL and the transfer portal.
Functionally it’s a much less talented version of the NFL without a salary cap operating on one year contracts.
Gameday atmosphere? Still incredible.
Build up and talk with other fans? Good.
Watching rosters churn 50-60% per year while billionaires bid over what entitled person is going to wear a uniform for a year before wanting to renegotiate their deal before the season is even over? Total joke.

This is exactly it for me. I grew up with Alabama receiving two different NCAA probations and postseason bans. I've seen a 4-9 season. The best season while I was in school in Tuscaloosa was the 2005 Cotton Bowl where we were clearly not in the same league as Texas or SoCal.
I was always hyped up for a new season. I've wondered if some of it is I'm just getting old and losing passion. Got a family to take care of and it isn't a sure thing I'm going to be able to watch a game live every Saturday. You know how it goes, dads of tRant. There is some extracurricular that has an event that bleeds over into an early or afternoon kick. There is some home repair that needs to happen that will take most of the weekend but the alternative is paying top dollar for someone else to do it so you can sit on your arse on a Saturday. Etc, etc, etc.
However, I do think the sport is incredibly unhealthy right now. Like I said in the Alabama board topic. The highly favorable conditions for the players - who have successfully argued the reality that this is a high-value commercial athletics venture and they deserve to financially benefit from it above full-ride scholarships - is counter to what any successful high-value commercial athletics venture looks like. They want to be treated like they're humble students who may just want to transfer for whatever reason and should be able to do it whenever they want like John or Jane Doe college student. However, no sport league that is successful allows this level of labor force freedom. It just doesn't work for the fans.
It's not that Alabama may get a great player poached, I'd be fine with a world where Alabama isn't quite as great in recruiting as they have been but at least I can follow guys like Roman Harper, La'ron McClain, Demeco Ryans, etc have their complete journey to the NFL while rooting for my alma mater. That is what is demotivating. You can't even get the surrounding intrigue of "hey Duke has a pretty great QB prospect, wonder if they can make a run" because he's taken more money to go play at Miami.
The money to the players isn't the issue. It is that fans root for schools not players. The players are not the center of college athletics from the fan perspective. I was looking at a preview for our season opener - ECU, who was really good last year - but the read on their roster situation is full gore. Being a successful G6 team is simply a target on your back. This 9-4 squad in 2025 is basically replacing every quality player on their '25 depth chart due to transfers more so than graduation. Who the hell would want to root for that? The whole money spigot the players are now enjoying is predicated on fan interest. If they want to be able to go wherever, whenever then go play FCS or lower ball. If you want the money, you got to do the things that satisfies the money.

A combination. Now you have NIL so other teams can offer your depth a chance to play, then the TP so they can move every year willy nilly. They should make players sign NIL deals that tie them to a certain team for 2-3 years minimum.
Not talking about you captdalton, but we had many people on here calling for the players to be paid, and now they are the ones crying about the state of college athletics the loudest. Irony is ironical.

This is retardation because one of the times Alabama got slapped around by the NCAA in my lifetime was because University of Tennessee boosters got out bid by University of Alabama boosters for a player in Memphis and they tattled to the NCAA to get immunity.
