Every indication that Alabama has essentially done the "traded out of the first round" equivalent for this new era of roster management in college football.
Why do NFL teams do it? Usually it is because they didn't have the position to get any of the players they wanted as first round contract salary cap commitments so they elect to manage their cap and contract term horizons over selecting a player.
Why does Alabama appear to be doing it? This "prospect class" is thin on top prospects, so that has dramatically increased the cost of signing the fewer quality prospects in this class. They looked at what they were spending in 2026 and would have to spend in a much deeper 2028 class, coupled with their existing roster having a lot of players with remaining eligibility, and decided to not get into bidding wars. They want to sign an elite QB in every class and they achieved that but seem to be avoiding the fray with the deep pocket books on everything else.
Obviously, it is better if you can just spend top dollar to sign an elite recruiting class every cycle but that is bad for roster management (you're inevitably going to lose a lot of transfers) and it requires having patrons who will throw good money at bad like nobody's business. Alabama doesn't have a Cody Campbell, Phil Knight, Ellison's half-his-age side piece, or Mark Cuban, so they have to make business decisions on how to keep a talented roster that can compete with the top spenders but not exceed their payroll capacity. Given that we're hearing of schools already white knuckling it to make their payroll commitments and the AI boom has not burst yet (which I think will dry up a lot of this money temporarily when it does), I'd say Alabama is just accepting reality and operating like a real sports franchise now.
