Too damn hot first weekend. Plus one for last weekend in October.

Houston entering the SWC in 1976 screwed up the schedule. Because the schedule keyed off OU-Texas being played on the second Saturday in October, and almost never varied in the order of opponents played, there were some years where there were sufficient Saturdays to get to A&M vs. Texas on Thanksgiving week, but in some years, it didn't roll around until the week after.

The schools made a concerted effort to play on Thanksgiving when possible in the SWC days from the mid-80s on; however, when the Big XII rolled around, ABC wanted the game on Black Friday. The schools had just gotten the game back to Thursday when A&M left for the SEC.

Things change. Students largely don't go to class on Thanksgiving week and leave town, so getting them back in town for the game is an issue (and a huge one for A&M since we give them 38,000 seats). A Thursday game screws up family plans for nonstudents, too; even Friday does, since most hotels require a two night stay. For those reasons, I want the game to be played on Saturday.

Some of my fondest A&M memories are when I should have been completely miserable. Missing Thanksgiving, and freezing my arse off while watching the game that night with friends. There was one year that I was hoarse for days, and sick as well from the weather but it was a fantastic game.

Throw in smelling like a house fire from bonfire burning the night before … it didn’t get much better.

Grew up attending on Thanksgiving Day, after not knowing what the day of the week was that entire week because of Bonfire, parties, and the overall festivities of it all.

And I miss it.

It was a great Thanksgiving family tradition. We have both Aggies and Horns in the family. Lots of good natured fun with family and friends.

Not sure where that info came from, but know for a fact the 1994 game wasn’t on Thanksgiving as I was there

Do not miss it. I don't want a football game on Thanksgiving. I want to spend time with my family on Thanksgiving doing Thanksgiving things. Not rushing Thanksgiving events to get done in time for a big football game.

I much prefer keeping Thanksgiving as Thanksgiving, and then spending the weekend eating leftovers and watching football.

NFL encroachment more than likely ended NCAA turkey day games. :(

I too, would much rather watch Aggies vs Longhorns than the shitty arse NFL.

It really brought together and caused some fun inner family drama that doesn't naturally happen the same way.

For some contrast, the Iron Bowl used to be played often on black Friday. Last one I remember was 2009. Maybe 2010 was too but I can't remember.

Anyways, looking forward to the Texas/aTm game. Always fun to watch

That little siiiiiiide step.

There are lots of incredible rivalry games with their own lore and legends in the SEC

Texas v Texas A&M is a good one to add to the list.

It was played on Thanksgiving Day (Thursday) from 1915 to 1999, with the only exceptions being 1943 & 1944, when the game was canceled.

From 2000 onward it shifted to the Friday after Thanksgiving, apart from 2000–2004 and 2006–2009 when the game remained on TDay.

This is not correct

Game was not played on Thanksgiving between 1993 and 2008

Last few years on the SWC and the entire Big12 eara (unit 2008) game was generally played on Friday after thanksgiving though it was played on 11/5/94 (aggie played Louisville and TCU later in the month) and the 1995 game was played on dedcember 2nd as the last ever SWC Conference Game

Playing the game on Thanksgiving is lame as hell. I don't care about when the game was historically played. the day after Thanksgiving is also dumb.

Play the game on Saturday. The tailgating atmosphere is much better when played on a Saturday.

Growing up in the 70's it was a game I looked forward to watching. Earl, Dickey, Woodward, Ham Lamb and Jam. IYKYK.
