They need to fully embrace the JUCO lifestyle like Kansas State.

Kansas State has barely signed JUCOs under Kleiman. That strategy used to work in Kansas but doesn’t anymore.

1) The transfer portal has diminished talent across the board in JUCO.
2) JUCOs have always been know as character risks, and the transfer portal has exacerbated that.
3) The Kansas JUCO league changed their rule limiting out of state players. It’s now just a one year stop for players with no intention of staying.

Kansas needs to follow what their sister program (Iowa State) did. Starts with the AD and the University being competent and committed to football, bringing in competent people who can run it, and investing in the program. Develop a plan to raise your football program from the dead, and f*cking execute that plan.

Agreed . . .I have several Jayhawk family members and it is pretty comical when they get started on the football program. For whatever reason, the admins there have no interest in building the program. Because of that the job has become quicksand for so many up-and-comers.

David Beatty left A&M and said all the right things only to belly flop, going 6-42 in four seasons.

He hired Doug Meachem, who was supposed to be one of the up and coming offensive minds. Meachem became so frustrated and dejected that he broke down, hid in a stairwell, and cried for 5 minutes before he realized someone was watching him.

So many talented, motivated coaches have been mulched up by that job.

Would be a great hire for Kansas, but a horrible move for Elko.

There are probably 15-25 non-P5 jobs that are better than the Kansas program and would allow him to work his way into a more prestigious job much faster.

They are fools. Can’t believe they are going to pass on Fritz again!

Your point is taken, but Mangino went 50-48. This Wikipedia entry on Mangino tells a sorry tale: "He is also the only coach since the end of World War II to leave Kansas with a winning record." Ugh!

I sit corrected. Two wins over .500. The only coach since end of the Second World War to leave with a winning record.

I admit I'd take the job, mostly because it would be nice to retire after a couple of seasons as a millionaire, but if I was an accomplished coach... not so much. Particularly if I was a younger coach.

Monken, however, might be interested because, lets be honest here, the USMA probably isn't splashing the cash on their head football coach. At 54 he has enough miles left on the odometer for one more major rebuild. Dragging Kansas, kicking and screaming, to something vaguely resembling being respectable in football would be a nice capstone to his career.

Isn’t Kanas the runner up for “coaches graveyard” second to only South Carolina?

Elko should wait for a better job. As should Jeff Monken (if he really wants to leave). Those are good coaches that could wait for much better opportunities.

Kansas is just hopeless.

If Elko didn't leave for Temple (his hometown and a much better program) last year he's not leaving for Kansas.

First the AD needs to fully commit to the football program. Until they do that, no one will win there.

Mike Leach is probably the only one who could get them some wins in their current state but they missed that opportunity.

Buffalo’s Lance Leipold

Might not be a bad idea. He built a D3 monster at Wisconsin-Whitewater and then turned Buffalo into the best program in the MAC. He clearly knows what he's doing as far as program building goes.

I don't envy whoever takes this job.

It’d (Kansas) certainly be a head-scratcher.
I doubt there’s an Ag alive who didn’t think Elko would have made the jump to HC by now.
But Kansas landing him would be the ultimate coup.

Stranger things have happened I guess.

Thats a tough spot to start a HC career.

I really like Elko and his defensive coaching and I think he'd be a very solid HC but Kansas has SO much going against it. I know spots open up because of previous issues but any coach going to Kansas better be prepared to walk the desert for 40 years.

Kansas has been awful for most of the past decade.

The past decade ... when were they ever good? Best of luck to whoever takes that job. That place is a coaching graveyard.

Yep I would be happy to see him go if I was a LSU fan!

I’m not sure how much of a pay raise it would be either. I don’t see how Elko takes that job.

That would be a terrible move on Elko’s part. Another great season and he would be in the mix for any big program HC position.

While a coach could go make 10-12 million for 5 at Kansas they would also pretty much bury themselves with losses as well. Could they recover from their W-L record? Maybe.
