The Kansas Jayhawks are still searching for a new football coach after parting ways with Les Miles.
The search seems to be coming toward a conclusion, though, and it appears an SEC assistant is still in the mix for the open position.
According to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, Buffalo’s Lance Leipold, Army’s Jeff Monken, Louisiana Tech’s Skip Holtz and Texas A&M’s Mike Elko are the final 4 candidates

Elko is a defensive coordinator, while the other 3 on the list are head coaches at the moment. We’ll see who ends up taking the job, but whoever ends up in Lawrence will have a total rebuild on their hands.
Kansas has been awful for most of the past decade. We’ll see who wants to walk into that mess. Could it be Elko?

Texas recruiting ties is a more dangerous and addictive drug to Non-Texas ADs imaginable.

Not a bad list for Kansas
I would give Elko a shot
I think he’s earned it

Idk that defensive minded coaches are going to get it done anymore. After last year and summer practices potentially being cut we might be past coaches relying on defense to win games as an option. Especially when your as significantly out manned as Kansas typically is. Obviously the better the defense you have helps but I'm not sure if that needs to be the mentality of the head coach. Thats a scary job for any of those coaches to take. It just has so many disadvantages all the way around. Its almost impossible to win there.

Kansas needs to just go all in with the triple option. That’s the only way they’re going to compete these days with their archaic infrastructure and awful roster management that’s dug them in to this hole.

I really like Monken, which is why I kind of hope he doesn't take the poisoned chalice of Kansas. Unless I am mistaken the most successful HC they have ever had there still finished below .500 in terms of wins. Ouch.
They have to use some trickeration to level the playing field and run a system no one else is. I'd say go with an Air Raid offense but if there is one type of offense the Big 12 knows its the pass happy one. I don't think they can get the bulldozers up front to wear people out with a power running game. I very much doubt they can get the all around talent to run a pro-style system. Everyone in the Big 12 runs some variant of the read option so that probably won't be a winning hand.
By process of elimination that does pretty well leave them with the triple option. Army gave Oklahoma absolute fits with the TO just a few years ago after all. It would take a couple of years, and those first few years might be bowling shoe ugly (Monken had a disastrous first year at Army) but I would think they can field a fairly decent option attack in a couple of years that could conceivably knock some teams off.

They need a coach who can play clean up in the Kansas JUCOs like Mangino did

Elko can do much better than the Kansas job with another good season at A&M

Your point is taken, but Mangino went 50-48. This Wikipedia entry on Mangino tells a sorry tale: "He is also the only coach since the end of World War II to leave Kansas with a winning record." Ugh!
I can't imagine why anybody would take the job.

I know it is hard to tell the difference when it comes to cellar dweller BDF football but it was Bill Snyder at Kansas State that had the steady diet of recruting JUCO's, not Mangino at Kansas.
Kansas is a place to end your coaching career and become an insurance salesperson. Elko is good but he is not dumb. this is the perfect job for Skip Holtz.

Kansas needs to follow what their sister program (Iowa State) did. Starts with the AD and the University being competent and committed to football, bringing in competent people who can run it, and investing in the program. Develop a plan to raise your football program from the dead, and f*cking execute that plan.
They don't need to run the triple option or the air-raid. Iowa State doesn't. If you can build a football program at ISU, you can build a football program at Kansas. It has been done at Kansas before. Kansas is a laughing stock because Kansas makes laughing stock decisions regarding football.

This coming year will likely be Elko's last at A&M. But Kansas? That's a career killer of a position

If someone can close the borders on JUCO recruiting in that state, Kansas could have a shot. The Jayhawk league is the only JUCO system that remotely compares to Mississippi's.

Kansas can live off of 3* TX talent. It will take someone who can develop a program and talent. Really need to go all in with facilities if they want to compete.

what, no Alabama assistant coach? It's clearly a bogus list.
edit to add that must be an Iron's Puppet list

They need to fully embrace the JUCO lifestyle like Kansas State.

This would be near impossible. Why would a guy from Florida care about staying in Kansas because he played one year of JUCO ball there?
Back when the Jayhawk League limited the number of out of state kids a team could field, there was a chance of an out of state kid going, making friends and deciding to stay. Now I’m sure everyone just wants to get out of there.
