Both OU and Texas feel we have been screwed the past few years by big 12 refs, which got me thinking about officiating in the SEC.

Is there a general consensus on the quality of the crews? Is there one ref that everyone hates? Please fill us in so we can know what to expect.

They are the worst in all of football. That includes NFL, NCAA, high school, and all local recreational flag football leagues.

They don't call a lot of holds in the trenches.
You can sleeper hold a defender and ride him into the dirt without a call.

They throw quick flags on the perimeter for offensive and defensive holding.
Hand on the shoulder for a wide receiver or tight end. Finger and thumb pinching a jersey with no influence on the play for a DB.

And they call nothing on the final play. You can mug each other with switch blades downfield. They can already taste the cold brews in the locker room.

This is basically the best summation of their general "style" of officiating that has existed for probably the last 7-8 years. At some point it was clearly decided that holding inside the LOS was just not going to be a penalty anymore unless it directly impeded a rusher who had a beat on the QB from getting there. You will never see holding called on an inside run play at the LOS. Ever.

As for how good or bad they are, they aren't very good. But I'm not sure any officials anywhere are any good anymore. The game is too fast and nobody seems to be able to keep up.

I used to think they sucked. Then I watched the Big 12 crew that called the Alabama Texas game last year.

They're pretty poor all around, but if you see Jason Autrey and his crew trotting out for the coin toss at one of your games, prepare for an object lesson in the Peter Principle.

They're the worst in the country, easily. You'll also find that certain teams get protected at all costs.

They generally rawdog Bama in every big game, and give lesser opponents the benefit of the doubt more often than not.

You’ll hear a lot of claims of “Bama bias” any time a call goes our way, but statistically, our opponents are the least penalized teams in the country every single year. It’s been that way for over a decade.

Bama’s opponents, for example, are called for holding at a rate 250% less than the national average, despite having one of the best pass rushes in the country every year. We just aren’t gonna get those calls.

They never miss a call and always called evenly, you guys have nothing to worry about. They even have the best REC training program for officiating in the country.

Same.

The UGA vs GT was eye opening.

They look for completely different things.

Ever seen your officials screw up so bad they had to make a public statement about missing 3 calls on one play that affected the outcome of the game?
