What a great story. Good to see.
This is a sad story, not a good story. Kids like this are why we have higher learning and he was unable to get the help he needed to go to a quality program.
I am sure he will do alright, but it is a sad story.

Dude is going to Bama to get paid, then he will get his real education when he goes elsewhere to med school.

What if he goes to an Ivy for grad school?

After some thought and consideration of all the schools' offers, Nelson decided it wouldn't be worth the financial strain to use this money on his undergraduate education. He plans on going to medical school after college, and knows he'll be faced with more tuition costs.
"With people being in debt for years and years, it wasn't a burden that Ronald wanted to take on and it wasn't a burden that we wanted to deal with for a number of years after undergraduate," Ronald Sr. said. "We can put that money away and spend it on his medical school, or any other graduate school."

Alabama has actually been recruiting merit scholars hard for the better part of the last 10 years. UA has more national merit scholars in attendance then Harvard. The university offers a pretty lucrative package for those students, too.
Believe it or not, Alabama's academic prestige is on the rise. It obviously hasn't reached its full potential yet but this incoming freshman class, at least according to the engineering dean who spoke at the Crimson Caravan in Atlanta Tuesday night, is the smartest class to ever come to UA. I think he said their average ACT score is 30. Now that the school has plenty of money, they are starting to get more selective in who they accept.

Read the article. Bama is paying him a lot to come to bama. More than anyone else would.
Sorta like they do with their football players.

He won't be a shoe in coming from Bama. Especially without a legit job out of his undergrad.
Would be a lot easier to do Harvard and then Harvard or whatever.

This is a non story. A guy from my HS did something similar at LSU because his family didn't have much money. He knew as many wise people do, your degree doesn't have to be from a tip-top school for you to be successful.
He's an attorney now and has brought cases to the supreme court over religious freedom.

Which is why it makes sense to go to Alabama. He's going to have his pick of Med schools and no undergraduate debt. Nobody gives AF about your undergraduate pre-med degree

Cool. Probably making like 150k max.
He could go to Ivy League and make that the second he graduates.

Hardly . His father, Ronald Sr., is an engineer who works as a manager at the Federal Aviation Administration and his mother, Sandra, works in management at FedEx headquarters.
It was a joke. Anyone who is accepted to 8 Ivy League schools can get a scholarship anywhere...and, if did have financial need, would get assistance to go to the Ivy League schools as well.

Meh..he's smart and will have a good GPA. He won't have any problem getting into a good graduate program.
Most of the people that went to grad school from my honors dorm freshmen year ended up at good places. GA Tech, Johns Hopkins, MIT, Harvard, Duke.

So they're going to Alabama because they couldn't afford any Ivy league school.
