Well if he were planning to go into business or politics, I imagine the prestige of his undergraduate degree would have been a bit more important.

When you have kids that grow up and they start getting these financial package offers, its interesting.
A kid accepted to an Ivy League school can pretty much make money to go to most state schools. A kid with a 30 or so on the ACT that would get a nice scholarship from a place like Alabama can get everything paid for and money back at a place like North Alabama.
Good for that student. His parents made education a priority and he is being rewarded. Now to convince the thousands of parents spending money they don't have on travel baseball so that their kids can get a "scholarship."
ETA: The Ivies are on a need based aid program. They do not give academic scholarships. If your family has money, you are expected to pay every penny. The kids parents are definitely upper middle class, so they were probably expected to foot most of the bill.
The student will receive an excellent education at the University of Alabama. Education is 90% what the student puts into it.

Yeah what dumbass for not wanting to accumulate a mountain of debt, and choosing to go to a school that will pay for 4 full years of school while getting a great SEC school experience.
don't be dumb

Not really. A state school like bama will literally pay him a modest salary to attend. He may actually turn a profit in addition to his free degree after 3-4 years. Tons of students make decisions like this every year to a lesser extent.

I have no idea how to answer this because as of now I still didn't read the article. I just responded because it felt right at the time.

....and how much more do you think he would financially make with an Ivy League degree? How many more opportunities would he have to make that cash with an Ivy League degree?

I would think he plans to attend med school at an Ivy league school. That's the way the article was written it seemed.
Thats exactly what his plan is. Get a world class, great education at the greatest school in the country without a mountain of debt then get accepted to an Ivy for graduate school. I get the impression this kid will be a success no matter where his degree is from.

Having a Harvard degree alone will get your virtually whatever you want to pay that off and beyond. To me the bigger picture is ignored; but hey, I'm not the genius here

Nelson told BI he thinks he can receive a comparable education at UA because it all depends on how much work a student is willing to do.
I do agree with him here. You get out what you put in.
If he wants to do grad school or med school at an Ivy, he will be in good shape.

Since he's going to Med school, slim to none. Most other degrees - you're right.
It's really simple

I suppose that depends on what his career goals are. If he's planning to be a doctor, then he's not missing nearly as many opportunities as he would if he's planning to go into law or business or politics.

Who gives a shite.
Where is he going to go work with that Bama degree?
It ain't going to be somewhere in New York or Silicon Valley.
Short sighted as frick.
