So they're going to Alabama because they couldn't afford any Ivy league school.
Or because their career path marginalizes the importance of an Ivy undergraduate degree...

I hate Alabama, but you have to admire this pick-up by their university.
As for this young man, kuddos to you for taking a different path to your success. You have taken a path less traveled by, and that will make all the difference.

Huh? Maybe for some people / majors. Making 150k right out of college would be a major outlier anywhere.

Cool. Probably making like 150k max.
My company pays our lawyer $265 an hour, so yeah, they can make way more than that.

He's not as smart as he seems at first glance then.
Seriously, I think the best word to describe this is "idiotic." Not stupid, but dumb in an idiosyncratic kind of way.

I chose attending Alabama on a full ride over attending an elite school and I'm perfectly happy with my decision. I don't have any debt to speak of and had a job waiting for me before graduating. While attending an Ivy would provide him with a network of very connected people, there's nothing dumb about getting paid to attend a state school and going to work or going to an elite grad program afterwards with an assistantship. The types of activities students engage in (research, internships, etc.) define a college experience far more than the name of the school or SES of your fellow students-- at least as far as your resume is concerned. Unless you're insecure and want a big name to make you feel good, I'll take the free ride over the mountain of debt every time.

My former tenant got his PhD from Harvard and made 65k as a professor in Landscape Arch. He's now teaching at Harvard making slightly more.
You sound like a young, entitled, and unwise dude.
eta: His undergrad was from Harvard too.

Assuming he doesn't go to an Ivy League and major in liberal arts.
Big Bank analysts pull 120-150 the second they graduate.

I find some of this story not to be totally truthful but I'm not sure who is fibbing. No schools on the planet offer more financial aid than Ivy league schools and Harvard leads the way in this by a bunch. If the kid was having to take out student loans to go everywhere else then that means, most likely, his parents couldn't afford to pay, which also means his Harvard education for 4 years would have been totally free or next to free. This story doesn't quite jive with me.

It ain't going to be somewhere in New York or Silicon Valley.

Replace Alabama with Auburn. Would you still feel the same way? If not, please STFU.

Obviously I wasn't referring to that profession.

I have a friend who was in a similar situation exiting high school. He took the free undergrad and is now at Yale Law. If he'd gone to any Ivy for his bachelors, he still would've gotten into YLS, he'd just have almost 200K more in loans.

good for him, besides just being book smart he seems to have some common sense as well.
he was in a win/win situation and i don't see how this hurts him in any way.

I almost went to Auburn because they offered a similar package. You could replace Alabama with almost any flagship state school and it's still a smart financial move.
