State vs. UVA tonight - a story that the Rant may not know

John Grisham (the author), who is a huge baseball fan and Mississippi State graduate and huge supporter of the MSU baseball program, wanted his son to play baseball at State. No demands about starting - just to walk on and be a part of the team.
Grisham was working with the athletic department on a huge collaboration at the time, and this was just one of the things he wanted. Not only was he denied, it went so badly that Grisham pulled out of the project and took his money to the University of Virginia, who was discussing dropping baseball before Grisham stepped in and saved it. (Read the story "On the Brink" from UVA Magazine Here: LINK)
Grisham's son went and played at Virginia. He had a few career at bats and Virginia baseball went from being completely cut to winning a national championship within a decade after Grishams $ helped build a new stadium.
This is the second dumbest thing done at Mississippi State in the decade of the 2000s. Croom told Ndamukong Suh he couldnt play linebacker in the SEC. Suh's sister played soccer at MSU and his parents desperately wanted them both at the same school and they loved MSU. He went on to Nebraska and became a Hesiman finalist as a linebacker.

I bet you all didn’t know there are 2 more stories about Miss State being the bridesmaid, but literally never the bride. - anc

Are you sure about Suh? Linebacker?

Suh wasn't a linebacker

Suh played defensive tackle but otherwise great story.

I messed up the position. Sorry. But he and his sister were extremely close (I think she works as his agent/manager today), so it was an easy sell and we screwed it up.

That is good context, and a testament to what can happen with an investment into the infrastructure and facilities/resources of a program. But, it is also hard to blame ADs for being Leary of placing themselves "in the pocket" of major boosters/donors who also want to extend influence over the program, even if it is as minor as "let my son walkon" and get a spot.
To the 2nd part, I though Suh was a DT. My memory must be getting bad. I do not recall him ever playing LB.

I dont need to be reminded of how incompetent Mississippi State has been through the years.

Right. But if the conversation went from “can my son walk on?” to a full blown severance of relationship with the university, I think there’s gotta be more to the story

shite, letting $180k stand in the way of at least a SEC title is the biggest bedshitting in SEC history.

Why was it stupid? Why would State let someone on the team that wasn't going to contribute when they could have someone on the roster that would contribute?
