This is the second dumbest thing done at Mississippi State in the decade of the 2000s. Croom told Ndamukong Suh he couldnt play linebacker in the SEC. Suh's sister played soccer at MSU and his parents desperately wanted them both at the same school and they loved MSU. He went on to Nebraska and became a Hesiman finalist as a linebacker.

You were on a roll till the last paragraph. None of it is true except for Suh’s sister playing soccer at MSU.

He had an offer and they recruited him. They were just terrible recruiters… well along with everything else during the Croom era.

Grisham lives in the Charlottesville area.

I can tell you from first hand experience that their stadium is not that impressive. They have seatback chairs, but only season ticket holders can sit in them. Everybody else is in metal bleachers or on a hill. Maybe 10% of the seats were taken, but they still wouldn't let anybody move into them.

Disagree with you there. The football program was in shambles when Croom arrived. He had to completely gut it to build it back.
I will always love Coach Sherrill (he is my favorite) but he let the program get away from himself in 2002-2003.

So while the W-L record did not reflect it, he left foundation in place for CDM when he came in 2009. His recruiting was under rated as well. He left some talent in place and the 2009 class was essentially his.

The 2010 defense had a number of players go on to the NFL.

Croom gets bashed around unfairly IMO but he did some very good things with the football program and left it in much better shape than he found it.

1) He lost to Maine. We could have given the week off to the team, Brought in South Panola, played the game and Maine would have been beat.

2) He was Coach during the undisputed worst beginning to end football game of the modern era. 2008 MSU-Auburn.

3) Got absolutely skulldrug his last game against Ole Miss. The team didn’t only not get off the bus, they didn’t get out of bed.

4) The “Winston Churchill say” speech prior to gametime 2007 home opener vs LSU… then get slaughtered on national TV with 6 picks with a QB that shouldn’t have been playing JUCO ball. That game damn near crippled Henig and he probably still can’t lift over 30 lbs.

5) Never came close to recruiting a QB better than 2nd string rest of SEC. Michael Henig looked like an 8th grader. Relf? Please. He couldn’t be dependent on hitting a wide open receiver 10 yards beyond LOS. I’m still astounded with that pass he managed to complete downfield in the 2010 Gator.

6) Managed to recruit 2 stud RBs… couldn’t do a damn thing with either other than ask them to carry the entire offense.

7) “If you can’t see improvement.. your blind” berating of a frustrated fanbase while again winning 3 games.

Croom was an awful coach that found a lot of overlooked players and lost more recruits than he won.

Why was it stupid? Why would State let someone on the team that wasn't going to contribute when they could have someone on the roster that would contribute?

Because we let Joe Iupe's son play basketball around the same time. Joe Iupe has a screen printing store. John Grisham is a best selling author that had multiple books made into motion pictures.

It was a dick move. Do you think John Stephen Jones is an SEC quarterback? Hell no.

John Grisham’s son? The award winning author that probably has to keep his money in a Scrooge McDuck style money bin? Who is coming to you with a blank check?

You let that walk-on lead off and play the 6 in some midweek games.

So we should prostitute our athletic program? I’ll pass. Let him take his money elsewhere.

Wasn't some rich oil baron stranger. Grisham is a State alum AND a huge MSU baseball fan. And famous on top of being wealthy.

He used to sit out in the Left Field Lounge, even after he graduated, and once wrote a nice piece about the LFL.

So we should just fill our roster with kids of rich alum? No thanks. If we ever get to the point we are taking spots away from kids because another kids dad is rich then I’m done with them.
