There was a time when nearly losing to western Michigan and losing to Iowa would’ve ended Michigan’s hopes for meaningful postseason games.

This is like half of what made CFB so uniquely exciting.

Now? There will never be a year that ND, Michigan, OSU don’t just sleepwalk into the playoffs. You can practically schedule your way into a 24-team playoff every year if your conference only has 3 decent teams.

In 2007 LSU had 2 losses, but nobody knew at the time all these other teams would choke and 2 losses would get you in.

In 2008 Alabama's year ended in the SECCG.

In 2011 the loss to LSU in the regular season was devastating. Everyone thought our national championship hopes were over. Of course OkSt ended up choking, but at the time of the game that wasn't known and it was devastating. That game had so much meaning to it at the time.

In 2013 Auburn ended our season on the kick six. Only loss of the season, season over. No do overs that year.

In 2015 I thought Ole Miss had ended our season.

Every single game was a "playoff game".

And then you take the years Alabama lost, or the 2 loss LSU game. All the other games around the league had big time interest. Alabama needed OKST to lose, that put extra interest in every game they played. In 2007 multiple teams/games had big time national championship implications.

Not to mention how much other games mattered from a SoS perspective, since that was so much more important. I even ran advanced stats programs on teams to measure them and see if BCS buster teams were legit (they weren't).

I don't know why people act like it wasn't exciting.

People want to talk about viewership, but back in the day I would watch damn near every game. Even during the week I watched games I missed. I'd watch those Thursday and Friday night games. I'd watch every single bowl game. I knew about every team, who their players and coaches were, etc

Now I pretty much just watch ABC and Alabama games. And ABC is free.

At least I got to experience the golden years of college football.

miss the old bowl system where you could have 3-4 teams claiming to be NCs after the bowls were played.

It was fun to watch bowl games back then on Raycom and Mizzlou before New Years and then finish the season with Cotton, Rose, Sugar, and Orange bowls.

It meant something to win a conference and be the rep at one of the big 4 bowls.

24 team playoff?

Why not add a separate G5 8 team playoff?

Just have a 8 team P4 playoff and an 8 team G5 or G6 whatever playoff?

24 is silly.

It should never exceed 16.

Although we need the bowls to do all the playoff games. No home field advantage. Nobody wants to go to a game in Michigan in December other than a bunch of damn yankees.

Hello Indiana relevance forever. That’s all they did the past few years and they will continue to do so

Why not just let everyone in at this point. So dumb. Keep on killing the golden goose.

Sure we lost to Georgia, LSU, Auburn, and Tennessee, who cares because we can still make the playoffs!

Everything that made this sport great is dead.

Well we have a shill running the SEC who goes along with every adaption, rule change and manipulation the B1G does to hold on to relevance.

The player transfer portal? That was the B1G
NIL? That was the B1G

All were done to give them their financial advantage and to liquidate rosters SEC teams built.

Then came playoff expansion to ensure their teams got in so they could manipulate that with softer schedules while killing SOS during CPF rankings with media voices, etc.

Their next attack on college football after killing OOCs, killing SOS metric and rankings is this latest expansion to ensure even if the SEC claws it's way back (as we have) they will always get a stack of money because they'll be assured 6 or more playoff spots just for showing up.

It's no wonder they gave that sweetheart deal to Notre Dame; so they could shut up and fall in line with this mess

All of this occurred while the biggest market that generates the most views abd advertisement dollars in the SEC went along with everything giving little resistance.

It's pathetic and it's all on that con-man we have as a commissioner

Terrible idea. Can’t imagine no SEC Championship game. This sport just continues to disappoint.

Just call it minor league NFL and stop pretending this anything to do with college sports anymore.

Beyond ridiculous at this point.

We didn’t have a SEC Championship for 100 years and the sport survived just fine.

YStar,
That is a classic SEC whinefest. You hit all the talking points so I give you credit. But no one cares because when the SEC had the power they ran roughshod over the sport like you believe the BIG is doing now. You guys sure didn’t listen to anyone when you and ESPN manipulated the BCS era.

It’s the story of mankind - whoever has the power decides the game and the BIG has the power. And because of the way the SEC ran the sport is why a lot of southern fans, like me, are quite happy seeing the BIG throw their weight around while you guys play second fiddle.
