And Arthur Bryant's there put BBQ on the cuisine map long before it had the popularity it has today.

It opened in 1907 LOL....long time for a restaurant for certain, no doubt very good....BBQ predates that in the Carolinas by about 300 years.....

I've had the pleasure of discovering some fantastic barbecue in every SEC state,

When it comes to Rendezvous in Memphis, I’d say it’s a bit like Dreamland in Tuscaloosa for me—OK, but not at the top of my list. There are so many amazing local spots that really shine if you know where to look. In Memphis, Central for ribs or The Commissary in Germantown for their pulled pork.

Speaking of Dreamland, I’d place it maybe fifth on my list of favorites in Tuscaloosa. For ribs, the original Archibald’s takes the crown . Alabama barbecue has some nice twists, like their white sauce which is love or hate for many, But if I had to pick the real standout, it might just be smoked catfish.

Definitely Texas for brisket. They are the king there,

But I really like Rendezvouz in Memphis

I like Rendezvous. Love the atmosphere. The cheese and sausage plate is excellent. I like the dry ribs too. But it's not even the best in Memphis. Neely's Interstate and Central BBQ are both better at just about everything. And I'm convinced I've probably not been to - or even heard of - the actual best in Memphis.

Living in KC now for the past 14 years, I've learned that they have a very inflated view of their BBQ, and while several places are really good, other regions do it as well or better. For KC BBQ, I go....

Joe's - Pulled Pork Z Man; and during Lent they do a soft shell crab po-boy that's incredible

Q39 - Wings and Brisket

Jack Stack - Sides, particularly cheesy corn

BB's Lawnside - Ribs

Gates and Bryants are both good but not my favorite at anything.

Still need to get to Slaps

Southeast Missouri has some really good BBQ as well. Strawberry's in Holcomb and Hickory Log in Dexter are two of my favorites. What I make in my backyard is the best though as others have already said...

Missouri has great BBQ-

The best places are the little Mom & Pop joints and every state has them.

Pappy’s in St. Louis is the best. So good, sauce is not necessary. Ask Zagat… Pappy’s is untouchable.

I stopped in at this place in Aurora, Missouri on a road trip and they had some great "competition style" BBQ. Huge selection of meats and sauces and trophies lining the walls all the way around the dining area. I've since been back and had the pulled pork.

While not an SEC town per se.......

Que49 in Jonesboro, AR is really good.
I love the Commissary in Memphis as well as Memphis Barbecue Company in Horn Lake Mississippi.

Central BBQ is great as others have said. I'll probably get roasted for this take, but the Rendezvous, while charming, is really overrated in my opinion.

I won't take a list seriously that has Missouri near the top. I'll take a sammich from Craig's over anything I've had from Missouri.

Ive lived in TN for going on 5 years now, coming from TX. TN BBQ is arse. We have tried a lot of places in central and east TN and it is mediocre at best. Maybe Memphis is where the good BBQ is, I guess? The rest of the state is garbage.

Best BBQ I have ever had was in Kansas City. Texas would be second.

Where ARE you eating ‘que in Tennessee? I HOPE it’s not at a roadside shack, because they’re second to none in my experience. Sit down places in central/East TN ARE hit or miss tho!

I pick ‘que joints by the following: if their pit boss is a “pit master”, then that’s a hard pass for me. “Pit boss? Yes, please!” Pit man/chief works as well.
