So, I dated someone who is from Bunkie, Louisiana. Been there a few times. It's where I was introduced to boudin. I've had all types. Crawfish boudin is the my favorite. I'm reluctant to try blood boudin.

Does anyone else just see Union v. Confederates?

And good god, I'm glad my home state is Maryland.

"The Morrill Act of 1862 ...stipulated these funds be used ... to teach such branches of learning as are related to agriculture and the mechanic arts ..."

The Federal Government wanted those states to be farmers and mechanics. Some states took the handout from the Federal Government, and that is where it ended.

Some states, including Texas, wanted to offer their citizens a broader, liberal arts education, that included business, medicine and law.

The University of Texas was provided for in the State Constitution, but the State of Texas never had any money.

A&M was created as a branch of UT, and was was opened to meet the deadlines established by the Federal Government.

The 1876 Texas Constitution established The University of Texas, directing the Legislature to create a "university of the first class". It authorized the creation of the Permanent University Fund (PUF) through land grants (2+ million acres) in West Texas (Permian Basin), which supports the UT (67%) and Texas A&M (33%) systems

This seems like bullshite.

There's absolutely no way Pulaski county has the highest literacy rate in Arkansas.

You'd think Benton and Washington County would easily win this.

Actually, Mississippi is turning things around. It recently went from near-last in national rankings to the top tier in performance. It's called the Mississippi Miracle.

Yes this is true, but it is also demographic adjusted data...

Classic example of playing with data to make a point without much meaning. Did they only survey the people working in the downtown skyscrapers?

Looks to be terrible data.

Asserts to only be based on three American Community Surveys (ACS) of people aged 16–65.
quote:

The American Community Survey (ACS) is conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau with high sample sizes (about 3.5 million addresses per year) and well-established methodologies. However, it does not directly measure literacy rates.

The ACS collects data on educational attainment (e.g., highest level of school completed, such as high school graduate or bachelor's degree), among other topics. Sources or analyses use educational attainment as a rough proxy for literacy, leading to state-level "literacy rates" derived indirectly from ACS data. This is not the same as actual literacy proficiency (reading, writing, comprehension skills).

So if correct, this appears to be a model based on how many survey respondents graduated from high school or college, which is probably self-selecting and not directly indicative of actual literacy at all.

Oh come on, all we hear about is how rich your fricking state is.

We know you're not spending that money on your power grid, so where does it go?

Why would a liberal show the Dakotas as having a higher literacy rate than California?
