“A lot of guys, man, they have it in their mind that they’re going to go out for the draft no matter what,” Saban said Wednesday. “I think you all know my philosophy on that — if you’re a first-round draft pick you should go, if not, you should stay in school and try to graduate. I think it’s getting tougher and tougher and more guys are making the decision to go out early and at least 50 percent of those cases, it’s not a good decision and people don’t make a team.”

Awful website, such a shitty link. Unreadable with all the popups. Closed it out, tried to open it again, and it's all redacted and blacked out without a sign-up.

Second round averages 5 million over 4 years. Hard to pass up.

It would be hard to pass up. But he has plenty of examples of guys coming back and improving their draft stock. And greatly increasing their first year contracts.

There isn't a standard right or wrong.

But leaving early also allows you to get that 2nd contract earlier. And that is where the players who make it really get paid in free agency.

Basically, NFL money is good for first round picks and guys with endorsements. Otherwise, better start working for that contract extension now and investing wisely or else your arse is crawling back to school after you become more expensive and half a step slower than the guy in the next couple of drafts.

Bama players get paid better than 2nd rounders and later round draft picks, so I can see his point.

These guys aren't gonna make anywhere close to what they can earn playing football. What's the NFL minimum? 400k,500? Whatever it is is more than these guys will ever have a chance to make unless they become surgeons or highly successful business owners which 999 out of a thousand won't. Let's be honest, most of these guys would do good to be forklift drivers if not for Football.

It doesn’t matter. If you’re an Alabama player, you’re pretty much guaranteed to be a bust in the NFL. At least according to recent history.

I agree but a lot of players have unrealistic expectations. Plus you can play in Europe for $500,000-$1,000,000 a year and then try out for pro teams. This is pretty attractive, even to the marginal players

Is that why Alabama had the most pro bowl players last year. And the second most in 2018?

What he is saying in context is that Bama already is paying all of his players 3rd round money, so if they aren't going 1st or second round they might as well stay.

Why are you mentioning reasons TO leave?

Good point. School is always there.

If I were a coach I say stay all 4 years and get your degree.

But really, it's just because I'm selfish and I wanna win.

Wait they should get paid and then actually work? Interesting concept.

That's easy for a $11 million coach to say.

It goes both ways.

TreDavious White from LSU made a great decision returning for his sr year and it paid off with a first round pick, he would not have gone that high coming off an injury plagued jr year.

Trai Turner left after a redshirt soph year, went in 3rd round, got to his first contract earlier, and signed a mega deal and is one of best OG in the year, I would say he made a pretty damn good decision even though he wasn't a first round pick.
