We weren’t here, so we never got the treatment. From Texas, though, I really liked the guy. Had that Jackie Sherrill about him, but funnier.

In one way, I think what he did at Florida was more impressive than what Saban has done. Florida had never even won an SEC title before he showed up. Gators are now considered a legit program that can compete for titles any time it has a coach worth a spit. Completely changed the place.

True. Though we were very good in the 80's but had some...issues off the field with cheating

Wasn't Mike Dubose the coach then?

Was 2-0 against spurrier in 1999 and still has a more recent SEC title than Tennessee.

If Bama fans are really this sensitive after all this winning, it will be terrible for you when Saban is done.

Spurrier was a good coach, no doubt. However, he had absolutely NO CLASS.

It wouldn't be a thread without a whiny arse UGA fan. Spurrier was 11-1 vs UGA so the butthurt is understandable. He is also the only coach to hang half a hundred on UGA between the hedges. He owned UGA

Why? Either we make a good hire or we don’t. That’s college football, it’s cyclical. But I’m also aware enough to know that the program will sustain and cycle back up.

The SEC was better for a 3-4 year stretch, but it’s as mediocre top to bottom as any other P5 conference now.

I was thinking more along the lines of multiple teams playing for nattys from the SEC instead of top to bottom strength.

The 3 games that Auburn won were against Fla when we were ranked #4, #1 and #1. Those were epic games and that was a great rivalry I hated to lose.

Sure what is it 6-1 National championships? I apologize to all the Bama fans who have hurt feelers. Once again, not my intention and I think the reaction from you all is pretty telling.

He had our number for sure. If you didn't guess right on strategy against Spurrier, it could be 28-0 before you figured out the adjustments.

He was the first, but I think Tennessee or someone else has since then iirc.

Spurrier pushed the SEC forward in a time when the Big 10 was moving ahead. He moved the SEC from Vince Dooly and Pat Dye smashmouth football into a true 3 or 4 wide offense. It made the league better.

Similarly Saban has changed the SEC in a way that if you cant consistently secure a top 15 class at worst you really cant compete in the SEC. SEC recruiting profiles are much stronger due to Saban across the board.

No one ever questioned that Spurrier ran a clean program. I think that he may have reported some schools. Whether Sabin is clean was a question at LSU and Ala. They were both similar in that they were able to stockpile athletes at the expense of their rivals.

No, let's be fair. Saban has 5 National Championships @ Bama compared to Spurrier's 1 @ Florida. Saban's other Natty was at LSU.

And as for the rest, you were the one that wanted to compare and left off the most important fact.

I disagree with the 2nd part here. Spurrier was not a great recruiter at UF.
