The Rose Bowl is making their case to the College Football Playoff as plans for expansion begin to materialize.
According to Ross Dellenger of Sports Illustrated, the Rose Bowl has given the decision makers a counter-proposal on the future of their spot in the College Football Playoff as expansion hangs in the balance.
“College Football Playoff executives plan to further discuss in the coming days the Rose Bowl’s latest request as it relates to CFP expansion in what could be an ultimatum for, or compromise with, the sport’s oldest active bowl game, sources tell Sports Illustrated,” wrote Dellenger. “A final decision on the Rose Bowl’s fate is expected this week.
“In its latest proposal to the CFP, the Rose Bowl is requesting to host a semifinal, if the semifinals fall on New Year’s Day, in two out of every three years the semifinals are held on that date in an expanded playoff. It is another attempt to keep the Rose Bowl’s traditional date and time (5 p.m. ET on Jan. 1) in future postseason formats.”
Alas, the “Granddaddy of Them All” is the biggest hurdle remaining to get the College Football Playoff to 12 teams for the 2024 season. If they can’t agree, the Rose Bowl could single-handedly delay expansion, per Dellenger.

That would open the door for every bowl to negotiate every aspect of the bowl schedule.
The West Coast is NOT a college football hotbed! The trip is expensive, and many fans want NOTHING to do with California.
The powers-that-be should look long and hard before turning the entire process into a Chinese fire drill!
PS-The only offense intended is to the People's Republic of China.

nothing is sacred anymore, not even the Rose Bowl's start time and date. Auburn and Georgia are playing in September. South Carolina and Oklahoma are in the same conference. The Sugar Bowl is being played at 11 AM on New Year's Eve FFS!

you'd be wrong then. There's never more than MAYBE 5 teams that have a legit argument after 13 weeks to deserve a title shot. GTFO with 12

Agree. I can't think of a single year when there were more than 4 deserving teams and objectively it's usually 2 or even 1 outstanding team(s) going back to the BCS years.

Because the Barn literally couldn't even, and incorrectly assumed they would get different results if they no longer played DSOR & Iron Bowl within the same 3 week span.

If you think #12 Utah should be playing for the NC, then you are the annoying one. Look at the final #12 in polls for the Playoff era and tell me they all were NC material.
Even Cincinnati last year did not deserve the #3 spot.

So the Rose Bowl wants to negotiate themselves into irrelevance?

The Rose Bowl thinks their time slot is so sacred but they bend the knee to the NFL every few years.
Screw them.
Screw them.

They may want to consider regional quarters and semis, so fans will actually travel to the games.
But there is a whole new set of rules that needs to happen before they decide which bowl games are going to get what semi’s and quarters.
Either make the conference championship games matter, or don’t have them at all.

They made their deal with the Devil in the 1950's with the B1G to give them an NCAA sanctioned (via Walter Beyers) monopoly. Now it has come back to bite them in the butt as the ACC, B12, and SEC have finally gotten their seat.
Screw em, B1G and PAC are the past, let them wither and die for their previous sins.

They're not even slowing it down. This self perpetuating 4 team invitational blue blood beauty pageant is done.
