The entire concept of bowl games is stupid in a 12 team playoff world. Every playoff game should be played at the higher seeded teams home stadium up until the title game, just like NFL. Its going to be so embarrassing watching playoff games in half empty NFL stadiums because the fans aren’t going to keep traveling all over the country 5 straight games (including conference title games).

Dear Rose Bowl,

Thank you for your recent correspondence regarding the future of the College Football Playoff. As I am sure you are aware, the CFP does not require the presence of bowls--it merely humors them. As we move to on-campus first round games, eventually those teams with a first round bye will also want to host CFP games. So, bowls being a part of the CFP will eventually end.

Regarding your recent proposal, we must respectfully decline. No one cares about the Rose Bowl, really, and the Big Ten expects to care even less about it now that UCLA is joining the league. We are not obligated to work around your desires; you are obligated to work around ours.

In conclusion, we'll go ahead without the Rose Bowl. We wish you the best in your upcoming Arizona/Oregon State broadcasts. We are sure that, for the few who tune in, the sunset will be lovely.

Sincerely,

The CFP

Agree. I can't think of a single year when there were more than 4 deserving teams and objectively it's usually 2 or even 1 outstanding team(s) going back to the BCS years.

The problem is that you are looking at it through a BCS, pre-playoff lens. The argument isn't between who, rightfully, should be the No1 and No2 teams. The argument has shifted to who is, rightfully, the No 4 and No. 5 team. And that is where it gets very vague, so expansion is the only logical conclusion.

My response to the Rose Bowl...

"Thank you for your interest in the Expanded College Football Playoff. We have decided not to include you due to your lack of flexibility. Good luck in the future with the top rated teams from #13 on down."

So the Rose Bowl wants to negotiate themselves into irrelevance?

Exactly.

I may be old but you are out of touch

Games are not for the fans, they are for Corporate America. Why do you think things got moved to weekdays? Fan can travel on weekends but have to work weekdays. Corporate folks "work" at the modern stuff.

Just kick the rose bowl out of the playoff, have fun scheduling a good game with the top 12 teams in the playoff. The rose bowl would become a game no one really gave a shite about, they have no leg to stand on in this discussion.

I have gained a ton of respect for the Rose Bowl for this. They seem to be the only entity left that is trying to keep college football from self-destruction.

Imagine thinking college football is somehow so special that it must work differently from every other sport.

"There are only X team deserving a spot each year." Then those teams should have no problem coasting through the playoffs, right?

I'll bet you weren't saying that when you didn't make the playoffs.

Anyone who wants a 12 team playoff is a retard. Rewarding teams for losing regular season games, getting players rested and still playing for the national championship while the teams that win have to play a conference championship would literally ruin the game.

Every game matters is why college football is so great. You start the season 9-0 and then lose. Who cares? You have to win your last 2 and it doesn’t matter because 12 teams are going? So dumb.

Um, yeah, that's a major reason it is, and has been, so much better than every other sport.

But I'm not surprised that this would have to be explained to the casual "fan."

It is that special. If you don't understand that you really don't need to be in this conference.

Of course, it's also deeply flawed and subject to the whims of random self-appointed experts as well as the myth that all conferences and schedules are created equal. It's inherently unfair. But it IS special enough to remain apart -- it's the only sport that delivers an entire season in a single fricking game.

I personally would prefer an 8 team playoff.

They already did it to college basketball

Old school = games count
New school = $$$$ counts

In other sports, teams with virtually no shot at winning it all make the tournament every year.

Why are you tripping so much?

Good!

If they must expand, why not start with 6 or 8? 12 seems so radical.

That’s a ridiculously stupid argument and the same tired argument could be made in basketball but somehow manages to work out
