It cannot be and is not an easy thing to wrangle the egos of 12 Southeastern Conference universities (Presidents, ADs, and Coaches among them) and then to add two more to the pile from Texas and Missouri of all places.

But Slive sure made it look that way. Testament to the leadership and vision he brought to the world. He won't go down in the books as an entrepreneur but an influencer. We should all be so lucky to leave that same kind of legacy behind.

To the Commissioner of the South

I am taken by surprise at this news, I feel like this is further proof in my mind that once you retire and your purpose is gone it doesn't take long for you to kick the bucket.

As we Aggies say, “HERE!”

We will forever be indebted to him for helping us join the best league in all of sports. We are eternally grateful.

He did a great job and was respected by all. Mizzou always seemed like a strange choice, still does. But I guess it's worked out.

He was the gold standard for conference commissioners when he was running the SEC. Everything just seemed to go like clockwork when he was in charge.

"As I've told our people, there's really only one conference in the country that can prevent us from being the best conference in the country, and that's us. The SEC." - Mike Slive

2007 article following Slive around the league on a football weekend.

Fun fact - Mike Slive was the main legal counsel representing Illinois / Jimmy Collins in the Marcus Liberty saga where one Bruce Pearl illegally recorded a phone call trying to bait Liberty into claiming Illinois broke NCAA rules in his recruitment.
