Yea - Smart's came up initially in our Avery search but I don't remember it ever being more than just one of a bunch of names.

Alabama was pursing Smart when he was hired by Texas. Alabama ended up hiring Avery after Smart and a few others ended up elsewhere.

The only way Cal goes to Texas is if he feels like he's hit a wall at Kentucky, doesn't feel like people appreciate him anymore and just wants to start over.
And, I mean, I could kind of see all of that.
Our dumbass fanbase just cost us a recruit going to Gonzaga. They won’t be satisfied until it’s all burnt to the ground at this rate.

The Calipari thing is a rumor because there are rumblings of discontent at Kentucky from fans, Cal has been kind of prickly about it, he's been there a while now, Texas would be a fresh start etc etc etc. Calipari isn't leaving Kentucky for Texas under normal, happy circumstances. Ever.
I have no clue, just know Texas beat us out in the past etc.
I'm sure many Alabama fans would feel about the same about Saban if Alabama had the type of year Kentucky just had.

Gotcha, thought you were saying that Texas had the chance to hire Oats when they hired Smart

Not even a remote possibility

I mean I get that there are FOGs, and it is what it is. He's a bitch because he goes out of his way to let everyone know he hates the basketball program.

The Kentucky folks can speak to this more specifically than I can, but I feel like there has always been kind of an understood compromise that the entire roster of 1 and done kids thing was ok as long as it produced Final Four runs and National Titles every year. When that stopped happening, the whole team turns over every year thing started becoming pretty annoying and the excuses of not being as good because of some issue that comes from having a brand new roster get irritating. And Cal unabashedly talks about how getting kid in the NBA is almost as important as winning, which again is ok when you are actually winning. It ain't gonna fly when you aren't.
All that kind of came to a head this year when the season just collapsed, and Cal was clearly frustrated throughout the season (he did the "fans need to understand _______" or "the fans don't get _____" thing over and over in press conferences).

Imagine going to a playground and yelling at all the children that you hate swing sets and slides. That's kind of like what he does anytime basketball is discussed.
He could just ignore it, but for some reason he just needs to let everyone know that he hates it. I don't get it.

Turning down Texas is how you say "I have arrived" in college coaching circles.
Actually taking a job at Texas is how you say "I will do anything for money" in college coaching circles.
Sorry, Sark.

So you're saying Texas is a more attractive job in BASKETBALL than Kentucky?
That's a pretty huge self own.

If he can consistently make the tournament at Bama we are happy.
Gonna have to disagree with this. He’s setting the bar pretty high. I think just getting in the tournament won’t really cut it. Still, compared to UK, the expectations are not close.

I stated I doubt he would take the job. But word is Texas is going to throw a bunch of money to get him.
Cal will make us sweat, but, if he leaves, Oats is the main guy Kentucky will go after.
¡Estoy de acuerdo con esa declaración!

BUT if he bolts, Oats would get a call.
You're telling me that UK basketball has fallen so far, that they're forced to call a guy who was coaching high school ball 7 years ago?
That makes me more sad for Kentucky than I'd feel losing Oats.

Texas has no more chance of getting Calipari than they did of getting Saban. In fact, the chances are probably far, far less than Saban.
I'm probably in the minority of Bama fans on this, but I think Texas was a lot closer to getting Saban than most...
