It’s crazy that Mainieri writes out his own active roster. he doesn’t like dictate it to an intern and review.

I used to defend Mainieri a bunch on here. I’m still torn on the benefits to being a player’s coach or a dictator. The great ones manage to do both. I realize not everyone can be a Skip Bertman.
PM was bashed for his recruiting here and that he was lazy. You can’t win a natty being lazy. That stuff undoubtedly reeled in top tier talent.
He was also bashed for throwing players under the bus. I’m old school, so I can appreciate a coach holding players accountable and telling it like it is. That said, it’s a new era in college athletics and guys can leave at will.
I’m sure this article has an agenda, but some of these mistakes are inexcusable.

From the stories I've heard, Skip was definitely not what you'd call a players coach. More of a dictator, sure, but definitely a leader of men. Some players thrived under that. And some players thrived under it while still hating his guts.

I watched that SEC Storied on him and came away from it with the distinct impression you wanted to stay on his good side.

If “by staying on his good side” you mean “being one of his chosen favorites who can do no wrong” then sure. I know a lot of guys who played for him and he had his 3-4 guys on every team that he had a love affair with and he treated a lot of very good baseball players like shite and ran them off. I’ve met him in a baseball setting and he’s a major, major a-hole. No clue where his super nice guy media persona comes from because he acts, talks, looks, and behaves like a total dick on the baseball field from what I’ve seen and heard.
It’s amazing how dysfunctional his program management was and how he was able to hold it together as well as he did at LSU, although I think his intentionally-easy scheduling and going balls to the wall in the SEC tourney every year helped him look more respectable despite the fact that he wasn’t competitive in the postseason.

If the players didn't feel disrespected enough, those in the dugout were incensed the first game of the LSU series. Scobey was injured at second base and a replay review was ongoing when Mainieri walked out onto the field. After briefly checking on his prone freshman, he spent more time hugging on LSU shortstop Steven Milam and interacting with other Tigers before making his way back to the first base dugout than he did checking on his injured player.
So great

South Carolina's reliance on women's basketball for any sort of relevance has truly made everyone that follows the program softer than baby shite.

Definitely picked up the having favorites theme. I was trying to be diplomatic about it because I have tons of respect for what he built. His style would not fly in today's transfer portal world.

Jacque Doucet interviewed Blake Dean on his podcast recently & while it was easy to see that Dean was not going to give out any dirty details about CPM, there were some subtle hints. He said that in 2008, when the team got off to a bad start, "3 team leaders" met with CPM regarding "several issues" the players had with his management of the team. "He openly took ownership" & made changes. The team then went on that 23 game winning streak. Dean added that CPM had "almost as sharp a bite as Skip did" when getting on players. "A lot of the players liked him, a few hated him."

I once held the door open for Paul’s wife at a very expensive restaurant….he looked very uncomfortable and would not make eye contact with me or thank me…so I cut back in front of him and let the door swing closed on him….
I am twice his size (probably not a big flex since he is a midget) and his face got extremely red, but he didn’t say anything…
