For every Saban and Kirby there are 300 coaches who start shitty and end shitty.
Cam Morris, Will Muschamp (twice), Joe Moorehead, Harsin
One big difference is that Saban and Smart brought in top 3 classes going into their second season

Napier has a good class. #10 overall according to on3(#12 247), but it's almost all 4 stars. If you go by average, it's the #5 class.
And he still has room for more.
Miami has a 3 5 stars due to NIL, but their average is lower than Florida, because it's back with a bunch of 3 stars.
Florida has never had trouble recruiting and even under Mullen they finished around 12 or so most years. However, the average is up a full 2 points. From around 90 on 247 to 92.
His average is above LSU even, but barely. LSU's has a 92 as well, which is pretty good. LSU has 25 commits vs 20 is the difference in rankings. We'll see if Napier is able to fill out the class, because if he does, probably around 6th best class.

Saban lost to LA Monroe and went 7-6 his first year at Alabama.
Players were leaving the team in droves.
Where did they go?

Especially when you consider it didn't happen because LSU rose to that level
The incomplete roster & lack of depth caught-up to us after the bama game, but Kelly absolutely got this team to vastly overachieve this year - whether you can admit it or not. So sit down, shut the frick up, and enjoy his takeover of the SECW.

“Saban and Kirby had too 3 classes”
“We’ll Napier has a smaller worse class”
He’s not doing. As well as Saban or Kirby.

SECR is the only place that thinks Purdue will win.Purdue has their entire team opting out.
So now the SECR thinks that’s a valid excuse unlike last year when LSU fans rightly said the same thing before the LSU bowl game against Kansas State?

I think Kelly’s grade is close, but I’d go B or maybe B+ because of how the Tennessee and AM games transpired. A- would be fine if those were close games, but Tennessee destroyed us at home and AM was extremely messy.
I’d put Kelly over Riley though. Riley inherited a much more talented roster (including a Biletnikoff transfer) in a much shittier conference and doesn’t have anything to show for it. Kelly went from 39 scholarship players to somehow making a SEC champ appearance.
I also just remembered that Polian is still employed as ST coach. That lowers Kelly’s grade alone.

So BV is basically Charlie Strong
Well if he goes to this bowl this year, loses it, and then goes 5-7 for the next two years, then I guess so. Actually I amend that, Strong and Texas went to the Texas bowl at 6-6 and got mudholed by 6-6 Arkansas... OU went 6-6 has lost many players and is playing #13 9-3 Florida State (which has lost NO players), so even losing this bowl game would not be equitable. Nice try though.

Venables: C+
There is way too much excuse making for Venables 6-6 season by OU fans. OU had a lot coming back who played last year. 6-6 is NOT acceptable for a team that started out #6 in the country. So Venables deserves a very low grade for how the season went. But he receives an "A-" for how recruiting has gone in both seasons. Other than not getting enough D linemen he has done really well.

I don't think people really understand the level of dysfunction Riley left at OU. Between the players that declared due to the coaching change, the players that portaled, the players that Riley took with him AND the recruits he took with him. Venables salvaging of the 2021 recruiting class and use of portal to get Gabriel kept OU from losing 8 games. This year he put together a top 5 class and is again doing very well in the portal. I think that gives him a bit better than a D.

Tell me you never watched OU games all year without telling me. Every gamethread here for SEC games is full of ref complaints. So let me tell you, the B12 hates OU and TX for leaving and have been working hard to get us losses. 2 games were ref losses in fact in one game we made a FG in OT and the ref called it no good. Pics are out there all over the interwebs of it being good. We shoukd have won 3 games where 2 were ref losses and the 3rd was bad bounces. 3 losses by 3 each. Flip those and this team is 9-3 and people view them differently. This team did no worse than Rileys last year where he went 10-2 but Caleb Williams win us 4 games by himself. 21 and 22 teams were the same teams except 22 had no 5* qb. If you lined up 21 vs 22 the 21 would win because of Caleb. If you swapped qbs and put Caleb on 22 team amd Gabriel on 21 team, then 22 wins head to head.
You can’t properly evaluate any HC after 1 year. Every team has different circumstances. Some have great players and just need a HC. Others are completely changing culture and “style” of players and will take more time.
I think we can all agree OU was never going all the way with Riley. In 2 more years we’ll have a better idea if BV can go further.
I fully expect a loss in bowl game. We are playimg a lot of true freshman red shirts. NCAA gave a free “5th” bowl game to any 4 game redshirts starting 15 Dec. Since thos seasin is a wash we’re going to play some young future players. And we’ll get beat but I’m ok with that as the future is what matters.

The bowl matchup is retarded. Should be UF/OU and FSU should've played Oregon St.
