Actually, no, it would be more uncommon if he DID coach. Most all coach transitions like this the acting HC finished the year while the incoming coach handles transition and recruiting. The only exception of course, is, as in the case at Ole Miss, if the coach was already on the staff.

Yeah, we need the defense to shut them down and flip the field to start the 3rd quarter. We also need to force some turnovers, they've got their two, we need one.

Well shite happens, that OU defense is still nasty, and if I had told any of you that OU would have two turnovers leading to points in the first half and Bama none, would any of you have believed it was tied? Lots of game left.
