It can really only be one of a few things:
1. LSU miscalculated and doesn't have $1M left over to pay it. I find that hard to believe.

2. Lane/the players are pressing buttons

3. LSU believes the contract isn't enforceable/Ole Miss believes the contract is more enforceable than it really is

4. Lane/Glasscock/LSU didn't understand the contract. I find that hard to believe also.

5. The players didn't understand the contract.

I think it’s more that LSU didn’t think Ole Miss would actually try to sue former players. But if they did their logic is “the lawsuit will go beyond the season and when they get drafted into the NFL they can pay Ole Miss back then”

In my opinion, I'd bet there is some dispute on whether a revenue share buyout is enforceable, if no revenue has actually been shared.

Players aren't employees.

This is what makes this lawsuit interesting in the larger picture of college athletics. Courts, to date, have been reluctant to call players employees and have honestly said explicitly they're not, but if revenue sharing deals make them have enforceable buyouts payable to the actual university, then what would you call them if not employees?

I agree, if I understand correctly, all of the buyouts previous were generally NIL issues and related to money already paid out.

It all depends on the contract language, but generally there has to be some consideration paid for the contract to be enforceable. If they were never paid any of the rev share, the buyout might be null and void.

ETA: Notably, in the timeline posted in the OP, there is no mention of them being paid.

I think we're definitely about to see it tested

Might as well let OM announce to the college football world they will sue players.

You keep saying this as if this is a gotcha. You think in 2 years some player offered by Ole Miss is going to say to themselves, "This was a great offer, but those 2 players I don't even remember got sued by OM for skipping out. I'm going to have to pass"?

Here’s the thing about that though, while LSU isn’t on the hook, the players in question are.

How much was the contract and/or how much were they paid?

I do think it will possibly affect how revenue deals are negotiated moving forward and how agents advise players

LSU is correct that they aren’t a party to said contract so they have zero obligation to pay anything.

Except if LSU reps informed agents, even if only verbally, that LSU was paying buyouts. OM appears to be on solid legal ground to get they money back. Heck, Texas A&M towed Walter nolen's car when he left.

I think every coach in America that is recruiting the same players will mention it.

Sure, they’ll mention LSU not keeping their word to players and trying to stiff a
coach they hired.

The vehicle was a tangible asset that Nolen received as part of an NIL agreement.

It doesn't appear that these players ever received any revenue share money, and they weren't employees of the university.

There is no precedent for this case and pretty much anything can happen.

It's already getting a lot of pub and blowing up social media, of course it's going to make a difference in recruiting down the road, the internet's not written in pencil, it's written in ink
