Yes, that is not the case for these players.
But, didn't they sign their names to a contract that specified terms for either party should they break the agreement before its terms are fully served?
It is not really different than any contractual agreement seeking liquidated damages from one party breaking the contract. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out. Not privy to the exact language of the contract, but adults signing their names to things and not fulfilling the obligation does have consequences. 550k and 400k are tough lessons learned, if a much lower settlement isn't reached or LSU doesn't decide to bail them out of it. The latter is unlikely, as I assume it opens LSU or its collective to some sort of liability.
Sucks for the young men. There is obviously a breakdown in communication somewhere, or they simply received bad advice from their own reps.

No one is saying they can’t. But they chose to buyout a contract with a buyout fee. They must pay the fee. It’s cut and dry.

Nobody has seen the actual contracts. Regardless, Ole Miss looks terrible here.

The players had to believe LSU would pay their buyouts when it came to this point.
LSU must be cooking up some voodoo legal strategy or something, because I can't understand why two football players would transfer knowing they'd have to pay back this money out of their own pockets.

Contracts were between Ole Miss and players. LSU’s involvement after the fact is irrelevant regardless of what may have been said or implied.

Not so cut and dry.
The buyout may not apply if the players didn't receive any revenue share.

Sorry for clogging this up, but it's clear to me that if the court finds for the players, Coaches can jump about at will with no concern for buyout clauses.
2nd edit...The answer to the buy out question is yes, this is a buyout issue. Players received no money, but have to "Buyout" of their contract to go elsewhere.
Incorrect, two different issues.
Coaches are employees of the university, players are not.

Most places that hold people feet to the fire have actually started paying that individual etc.
Legally yes. OM is in the right here. If I remember right from Pete’s presser though there are a few more than just these two that went to LSU. Would be interesting if that comes up in court the differential response
