Not trolling. Why is a FCS/Mid-major-level football program like Vanderbilt in the SEC?

They make the other SEC bottom feeders like Kentucky, Misery, Arkansas, Tennessee look like powerhouses by comparison.

Yes, they have strong academics. So do the Ivy League schools, but no one will confuse Harvard football with Alabama. Back in the days of amateur athletics perhaps academics mattered, not anymore. Bet half of these kids today don't even go to classes.

They're good in baseball, but who cares? Football drives this bus.

Not dissing Vanderbilt, it's by far the best school in the SEC but they have never seemed like a good fit. Now as we transition from amateur athletics to the age of professionalism with players making more top university administrators, it's increasingly obvious that Vanderbilt is a square peg in a round hole.

When Texas fans realize they’re not going to run shite over here, it’s going to be great.

This isn’t the Big 12. Your opinion doesn’t matter that much anymore.

I'd rather have 10 Vandy's than 1 Texas.

They are a founding member of SEC. They belong more then all the recent additions. Plus every conference needs their punching bags. Vandy is it for SEC. Soon to be joined by Texas in that line of work

Vanderbilt has one of the nation's best baseball programs and is also pretty decent at basketball. They also happen to be very solid when it comes to academics.

It's amazing how arrogant Texas fans are, down to the last man. Absolutely zero surprise that they've destroyed two conferences in the past 25 years.

Someone has to bring up the academic standards of the league. I mean we got LSU and the Mississippi schools up in here...

To answer your question, leftover legacy from a different era. Stanford/Vandy are at a cross-road and the future is not clear.

Vandy can win when they have the right coach, just see the Franklin years.

They were a founding member. Every conference has their small private schools with good academics and mediocre football success. Vandy is really competitive in baseball, fyi.

The Big 12 has Baylor and TCU

The ACC has Duke and Wake Forest
The Big 10 has Purdue and Northwestern (granted, they’ve been competitive in football lately)
The Pac 12 has Stanford (also have been good lately)
