New Birmingham Bowl Stadium Progress

For those that have ever been to Legion Field, you can attest that it has passed its former glory days as Football Capital of the South. I grew up in Birmingham and attended many games there in my youth. The surrounding neighborhood was low income, but I never had any issues parking in someone’s yard and walking to the stadium. The residents were always pretty friendly and appreciated the extra income from parking in their yards. Regardless, it was definitely time to move to a newer venue. As a former resident, I have been interested in the new stadium design and following the progress.
A new stadium is being constructed downtown and is located next to the civic center, Sheraton Hotel, Uptown Entertainment District, Top Golf, and the SEC offices. Construction has been taking a while, but it appears to be a quality design versus a lot of the recently quickly constructed stadiums for smaller universities. The grass end zone seating shown in the conceptual drawings has been changed to additional seating. Final seating will be 47,200. This will be a much better home field for UAB and the Birmingham Bowl. Current completion projection is October 2021.

Its actually a solid location regarding bars and food. Shame that only trash games will be played there

Not bad for UAB program
Good revitalization for that area as well.
Not to mention Top Golf will be close

I'm attending a trade show at BJCC in 10 days, so I'll take a few photos of the construction and post them.
I'll also make sure to flip off Sankey while I'm there too.

Why is Birmingham wasting their money on a football stadium for a team with no fanbase unless it's popular for activism, and a tier 3 bowl game?

Looks nice. Birmingham is a nice place. Not quite so hot and humid in summer.

If UAB was smart, they would start scheduling a few more thursday and friday night games. I would 100% buy season tickets and go to those games.

Universities count game attendance differently. Most count tickets sold as the official attendance. UAB uses actual fans in attendance. Even using that methodology, they have led CUSA in average attendance during most of the Bill Clark era. I have previously seen their season average attendance numbers slightly below 30,000. They had about 40,000 at their home opener last year. 30,000 in Legion Field looks pretty empty.

UAB gunning for a Big 12 spot

Not really. The ones walking distance are in Uptown, and that place has struggled attracting quality places.
It is close enough to downtown that several bars and restaurants are a short drive/Uber away, or a fairly long walk.

It would be such a dumb move by the Big 12, but it would be so awesome having Big 12 football in Alabama.

UAB getting P5 level recruiting with schools nearby showing the footprint for actually playing defense?
UAB might win the Big 12 in a few years with your scenario.

The only way the stadium is ever that full is if the Iron Bowl somehow moves back to the city.

Birmingham gets a bad rap but it is actually a damn nice small city and a fun place to spend a long weekend. They should have built it bigger than 46K! Concept looks sharp!
