+600,000: Miami

+60,000: Louisville
+55,000: Virginia Beach
+30,000: Memphis
+30,000: Birmingham
+15,000: St. Louis
I included the entire SEC footprint plus Oklahoma, North Carolina, and Virginia. Only St. Louis added fewer people to its population in the last 9 years.... and its a stretch to even include it on the list.
Atlanta, Nashville, Raleigh, North Carolina, and Texas are siphoning population from places like Birmingham, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Memphis.
Yep. Fairly soon, you will have places like Charleston SC, Greenville SC, and Knoxville TN exceeding Birmingham's metro area. Birmingham was once one of the dominant cities in the South, and then post civil rights, it just quit growing.

Charleston is certainly tracking that way. Those others might take a bit longer.
If the 2010-2019 growth rates were to hold up forever (which never happens), this is when metro Birmingham would be passed by each currently smaller Southern metro area:
2035- Cape Coral-Fort Myers
2035- North Port-Sarasota
2036- Charleston
2038- Greenville
2041- Tulsa
2042- Lakeland
At current growth rates, Knoxville is not scheduled to pass Birmingham until 2075.
Of course a lot can change. All of these cities could very easily have new counties added into their metropolitan definitions. If Tuscaloosa and Shelby Counties keep growing in the same direction of each other, its conceivable that within a decade or two, Tuscaloosa could be combined into the Birmingham metro.... that would push the area's population up above 1.3 million as of now, putting it ahead of even New Orleans.

Birmingham is perfect. In reality. It is a very nice suburb of Atlanta. Sets between the Tennessee mountains and gulf coast beaches. The topography isn't conducive to the population like Atlanta. As someone who has lived in the Atlanta metro, I hope it never gets that size. BHM is fantastic to fly out of. The older I get, the less I want to deal with high COL and long commute times.

The state championships are played at Alabama's and Auburn's stadiums in alternating years.

They will most likely be moving them the Bham once the stadium is complete.

Birmingham doesn't need to have any more riots. A buddy of mine just left downtown Birmingham for Orange Beach. The whole bottom floor of his condo complex had it's windows busted out.

I haven't seen any reports of any riots or property damage since that one Sunday night in May when things got ugly. There have been protests all around the area, but none that I know of have turned violent.

What kind of dramatic BS is this?
There were riots one night and they were pretty darn tame compared to the other cities. I drove through downtown the morning after and was surprised at how little damage there was. The ones that really took the brunt of it were Alabama Power and Harbert.
The vast majority of the damage was just store front windows. That sucks and I hate it happened, but let's not act like the city is in disrepair and that riots are happening on a regular basis

. Birmingham still can't compete with Nashville, Charlotte, or Atlanta in attracting high paying jobs. So for every young college grad we convince to move here, another just left to take a raise in Nashville
That and Birmingham lack of an industry identity. Other than the obvious medical footprint. At one point bhm was known for the financial/business and communications with Regions, Wells Fargo, Suntrust, Southern & Bell South and others in the area but that is starting to be less and less.
Other nearby cities have a clear industry: oil, drilling, manufacturing- Mobile
Health, Production, Business- Nashville
Finance & Corporate America 101- Atlanta
Tech, Defense, Nerds and now Manufacturing on a much larger scale- Huntsville
Huntsville is more of a threat because the race with Nashville and Atlanta has been decided a long time ago. And Huntsville is adding jobs like crazy and real estate and infrastructure are starting to become problems with the influx of people.

Downtown Birmingham isn’t bad. It’s Ensley, Westend, Eastlake (20/59 to Oporto Madrid-ish).
Norwood is slowly making a comeback.

yeah, that's the night it happened. Just wait until another white cop kills another black guy. All this is rinse-repeat.

I thought they already announced that when it opens they are going to a three city rotation? One year BDS, one year BHM, one year JHS (not sure of exact order)?

If Larry had actually let people that knew what they were doing run the park from the start it would have turned out different. Hell, he had a tentative agreement with a large park company (Cedar Fair) to take over management before it opened for season #2 but he scared them off at literally the last minute (They had employees in town ready to go as soon as the contract was finalized).

The Alabama HS Finals used to be at Legion Field. Central location, big name stadium, 'Bama played there. Then the Iron Bowl went home and home.
They moved it to rotating between UA and AU, and it's a great recruiting tool that they won't easily give up. I suspect that what will happen is that the new stadium gets added to the rotation. It would make sense to hold it in B'ham every year (still centrally located) but I don't expect that to happen.

Yeah I just looked it up:
Birmingham 2021, 24, 27, 30
Auburn 2022,26, 28, 32
Tuscaloosa 2020, 23, 25, 29, 31
While Birmingham is (mostly) the most centralized location, UA and AU are not going to give it up without a fight just for recruiting purposes.

Yeah I think it was mainly the first weekend and to add they did break the windows and damage the doors of the Alabama Theatre and Lyrics. My wife received an email asking for donations to help repair the damage.
