Birmingham is much better than it was in the 90’s. But that ain’t saying much.

Sorry that my different opinion triggered you. Have lived here and worked downtown 30+ years, and seen lots of changes in the Bham area and downtown in particular. Some good, some not so much. We'll see how it plays out, but Woodfin hurt the city IMO.

You don't know what you're talking about. Woodfin has been great for the city and has been on the side of development and business since he came into office. So much in fact that the inner city residents who got him elected have begun to resent him because of 'gentrification'. He threw a bone to those citizens when he removed the statue.

If UAB was smart, they would start scheduling a few more thursday and friday night games. I would 100% buy season tickets and go to those games.

UAB really needs to make a push for the open spot in the AAC. Imagine UAB hosting Houston or UCF on a Thursday/Friday night. There would be a real party.

But for someone to say Bham is on the uptick is not based in reality.

I would say it's holding steady but barely.

As the stadium goes I'm not sure where they are going to have 20k vehicles park.

It’s funny how people are so down on their cities when all places have pretty much the same leadership issues.

We live in a suburb outside of Bham. Our city has been great to work with. No forced masks. No forcible store closings. No forced quarantines. They released a back to school plan this week. They even opened up one of the new ballparks they built for a baseball tournament.

Unfortunately, the county health commissar has impacted us and now MeeMaw at the state level.

I love it when some redneck who lives out in the sticks 2 hours away and hasn't been to Birmingham since that time they had to pick up Mawmaw from her chemo at UAB in 2006 tries to make a negative comment about Bham like they know jack shite

You hit the nail on the head, same goes for people who haven't been to Bham in 5 years hell even within the past 2 years downtown has changed dramatically.

So you're telling me that Kincaid and Bell were better for the city than Woodfin? I mean damn, the last good mayor for Bham, at least from a vision perspective was Langford, and he was a damn crook.

Yea, most of the momentum that happened under Bell (despite all his faults) has mostly tapered off. Bham has been in a bit of a holding pattern the past two years or so. Woodfin has been great at appointing committees and councils, but very little has actually gotten done.

On a positive note, from what i've heard, Woodfin has started to shut up and listen to the BBA and chairman Jim Gorrie. That was the best thing Bell ever did as Mayor.

Did I say that?

Was by there earlier this week. Stopped by and ate then looked around. This is going to be a nice stadium and addition to the Ham. Family member is dating one of the starting O-Lineman, the kids are super excited about having a new home. We are looking forward to attending games. It would be AWESOME move up to a bigger conference. If they can Coach Clark, I could see this happening.

I'm looking forward to it. If uptown can get some better restaurants and bars, it will be sweet.

UAB gunning for a Big XII spot

They need to shoot for the American. Far better conference than what they’ve got now and a realistic chance too

I pregamed for a couple of concerts in Uptown and had a great time. Couple of decent spots to eat especially on a Gameday

I'm not sure what is there currently as the tenants seem to change every few months. Last time I was there, there were 2 decent pre-gaming spots - Todd English Pub in the Westin, and Mugshots - a local burger chain. The latter makes terrible burgers, and Todd English was packed with crappy service the one time I've been there before an event at the BJCC. The food was pretty decent though. There is also a Brazilian steakhouse and a Mexican place. Never been to either, but neither really seem good pre-gaming spots for sporting events.

If that stadium gets close to capacity crowds, the Uptown area will be a shitshow unless they add several new tenants that can handle the crowds. Maybe this stadium will be the catalyst for Uptown to finally take off and get some decent destination places.

This is my hope. Hell, as of now, i'd probably go pre-game at top golf if i'm pre-gaming in that area. Its prices are actually reasonable and the bar is solid with lots of TV's. Plus, could go hit some balls if I wanted.

I know for a fact UAB has pitched the idea of coming to the Big 12.

It would be nice. Not even sure if there are any vacant spots there currently.

The one time I went to Todd English was before a play in the BJCC theater. There weren't any other events there at the time, and soon after we were seated it was an hour wait for a table and the service was painfully slow. If all those people were going to the play, several missed some of it if they hung around for their food. I bet those places are hard to staff given they really only get busy if there's something going on at the BJCC.

Would be incredible to have Texas/OU, Auburn, and Bama playing in the state on the same day and not against eachother

If that somehow happened I bet they make a run at Memphis as well so they could strengthen their eastern foothold
