That is a horribly inefficient way to do things.

You spend all kinds of resources for failure.

Although in the case of the Mississippi schools... I guess they have no choice.

I did look at USNWR Ole Miss and MSU's retention rates (88%) and (82%)_respectively. That is somewhat low compared to most other good schools.... (and top schools have high retention rates).

In the SEC Ole Miss is 13th and MSU is last...with UK and LSU sandwiched between. The SEC highest was like UF (97%) and Texas (96%).

Regardless, at 88%... Ole Miss is retaining most of their students through freshman year. Don't know if that is a good or a bad thing considering their admissions situation.

As stated earlier in the thread, not much we can do to improve it unless Ayer’s is repealed.

Agreed...

And my post was not to actually be negative regarding Ole Miss...

But a couple of Ole Miss people were saying that they just flunked and weeded people out. That really doesn't seem to be the case.

Looks like they are working pretty hard to retain students. Which is both good and bad simultaneously considering their situation.

For instance... JSU and USM retention rates are in the 70% range.

Oh yeah, massive effort. In the short time I worked for the school, it’s all we talked about. Fundraising efforts for resources, finding ways to structure curriculum to be rigorous but also promote sticking around, and overall giving people what they need to get the education they’re striving for. There are “weed out” classes in your harder majors, but we also want pivoting to be as frictionless as possible. It’s tough, but we try to make it work.

know how Millsaps can possibly survive much longer. The enrollment is under 600.

Yikes

The problem with Millsaps is location. That is no longer even remotely a safe area of Jackson

Op acceptance rate is a vastly overrated metric. What matters is the academic rigor students are put through and whether they are pushed to excel in order to get a degree.

Remember what Thomas Edison said about working hard?

A genius sitting on the couch eating doritos accomplishes nothing.

Actually, I believe George Washington said that before crossing the Delaware.

My oldest was accepted to Florida and Tennessee, chose Ole Miss.

It is just a better college experience and school.

In what universe is Ole Miss a better school than Florida and Tennessee? Wow.

Same here. My oldest had a 33 on the ACT and so did Honors and Croft at OM. Could have gotten in most anywhere in the country with his other accomplishments. He's 27 and makes six figures. I'd say OM did right by him. It's mostly what you make it yourself and not just thinking a school has to hold your hand.

That area was bad 30 years ago. Today, it's a warzone.

Rust college? I’ve never heard of it.

Googled it and had no idea. Oldest HBCU and 2nd oldest school in Mississippi.

looks like COVID also did a number on their enrollment. Sharp drop in 2020 that has not recovered. But yes, Jackson is a sheet hole
