From Longhorns Country on Fan Nation......

After the 2023 season, play time is over in Austin.

The Big 12, respectfully, is not on the same plane of depth as the Southeastern Conference, and the Texas Longhorns will have to avoid getting a gut punch in year one. Former Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason had words of wisdom for Texas to prevent it from getting trapped in quicksand after its SEC move in 2024.

"Get ready. It's a monster of a league," Mason said at SEC Media Days on "SEC Now" Wednesday. "I go back to before I came into the conference, I just remember the realignment and what it looked like when Texas A&M and Missouri came into this conference. And, you know, there was a lot of fanfare about Texas A&M and what it looked like. Missouri, nobody really said much, but you saw Missouri in those first two years really come in and make a splash in this conference."

"Watching these teams play a year ago, coaching against these teams, really good football teams," Mason said. "They better be ready because when you come to this conference, hard hat, lunch pail and hopefully you stay healthy."

Some really good stuff from Mason there. I had no idea Vandy thought the SEC was tough.

Texas has a lot of talent and will have more by 2024, if you think they're gonna lose 6-7 games you're delusional. They'll prob be like A&M and surprise the league at first then fall off into oblivion.

I could see OU having more sustained success but middling records overall.

I laughed so hard when that happened. But don't think that would happen with Mike the tiger. Miss the days when they would put him by the visiting team's entrance.

The Big 12 is every bit "as deep" as the SEC. Right now, the SEC has 2 elite teams, 2 very good teams, and a bunch of abortions that think they matter because of the accomplishments of other schools. It's really kind of sad.

Wait till you go to Starkville and leave with your tail between your legs. Even the worst teams in the conference can give you a game and wear you out. Will also deplete your squad so hard to get to the end of the season with the original troops.

#9 Auburn (undefeated at the time) rolled into Starkville to take on a Bulldog team with just 1 win to show for the season. At the end of the game, Auburn escaped with a 3-2 win but the wheels came off and Tubbs was gone at seasons end after 10 seasons.

The Big 12 is absolutely not as deep with the kind of athletes almost all the teams in the SEC have. I am not saying every team is good and plenty have some holes, but most, even as they are losing to you, will also beat the hell out of you physically. Great skill at the top will get you through a game or two, but depth is the only thing that will get you through a season.

And an Arkansas team that beat the laying down dog shite out of you. Get used to it.

The single greatest Arkansas team in the last 12 years beat one of the top 10 worst teams in Texas history at home? NO WAY!!!!

Gotta admit - it was pretty adorable how big of a deal that game was to y’all. Your fans rushed the field and even your AD was crying afterward. What a program-defining win!!

Says the fans of a team who keep referring back to a meaningless bowl game 5 years ago.
