Is it really that damn easy to get arrested in Athens?

Yes. Regular students get hit with MIP and ticky tack charges downtown constantly. Cops are notorious dicks toward the general student population before you even get to their resentment for the athletes. Athens also has the distinction of having 3 overlapping police departments working with or on top of each other (plus Oconee County on the west side).

I like to shite on uga as much as anyone but a crime that requires less than $50 bail is nonsense.

If you go back through most of the arrests in the past couple of years, many of them fall into this category. A vast majority could just be basic misdemeanor citations but the cops choose to arrest and book for what have been as low as $15 bonds.

Yes but one of the charges the other day was 48 in a 35, national news. I dunno what the deal is but I guess it gets attention. Another double digit bond

39 dollar bond. Obstructing a sidewalk.

That's an Athens PD charge if I ever heard one.

A good university or university town cop would be able to handle something like this. Should be able to even turn it into a positive interaction rather than an arrest and major news.

I’ve been told that misdemeanors aren’t actual crimes

Whoever told you that is an idiot.

If someone unlawfully punches you in the face. The charge is simple battery (or battery if it leaves a visible injury such as a busted lip or a black eye). Simple battery (and battery) is a misdemeanor.

Prowling? WTF?

He was charged under a local ordinance that combines obstructing a sidewalk and prowling.

He was charged for the obstructing a sidewalk part, not the prowling part.

Well damn, that's three strikes territory. Glad the cop brought his thesaurus.

Obstructing a sidewalk after midnight, and "prowling" with a fricking $39 bond. What in the hell is this shite?

Georgia is so far ahead of Floirda in arrests there is no way we can catch up to them at this point. We are never beating Georgia again. Florida is too damn milquetoast. We haven't had an arrest in months. We might as well be a seminary.

Maybe they wanted him to move back and to the left?
