They have a history...Just ask Curry .....

You know that Curry won an SEC title and was a win in Auburn from playing for a national title, right?

So, let's ask him. The answer would be that conference titles aren't good enough. He couldn't get over the hump and the guy that replaced him DID win a national title.

That's how it works when you demand excellence.

The first part of that is easy. Saban is tGOAT. It's a near certainty that LSU's last 2 decades would look like Alabama's last 14 years.

As far as what would have happened at Alabama? It's simply impossible to say. Maybe Dabo gets the call a few years ago? I'd say odds are very high though that the last 14 would look more like LSU's last 14 than Tennessee's.

I agree with you.

My point is that Alabama doesn't have some unique advantage just because they're Alabama.

If Saban and Bryant never come to Alabama, they're likely just another elite program as opposed to the juggernaut they are today.

I think the Alabama job will be clearly desirable and I dont think Alabama will start having losing seasons, but to not expect much more parity in the SEC after Saban leaves is kind of ridiculous.

That's fair. Most reasonable Alabama fans expect the same thing. Hell, when we hired Saban we'd have been quite happy if he'd delivered the results LSU's produced since he's been here.

Alabama fans who expect the next guy to mimic Saban are going to be really disappointed. By the same token, fans of other teams who are expecting Mike Shula level performance are in for a rude awakening too.

Although outside of Bear and Saban, only one guy has done so since the early 1940s.

Well since the 1940s those two coaches have been the coach at Bama for nearly 40 seasons and counting. That is what happens when you have probably the two best coaches in college football history. They tend to stick around.

I agree but there's also 40+ years there with only Stallings' title to show.

Saying that Alabama will just keep "chugging along" is delusional. You'll likely fall back among the rest of us.

Maybe they'll be able to coast as far as LSU has on Saban's coattails

Bryant came to Bama in 1958. There have been 62 seasons of college football since then. 46 of those at Bama have been coached by Bryant, Stallings and Saban. That leaves 16 seasons without one of those guys and we all know the shite show that was Bama football from 1998-2006 or 9 of those 16 seasons. Even with that bad period Bama won an SEC title and won 10 or more games twice. Bama will not be as good after Saban leaves, but history does say Bama will not go far and will probably hire the next Saban/Bear by 2045.

Well, consider this. Instead of paying $21,500,000 to make a coach go away, when Saban retires, Bama will have that to dump on top of the pile of money we were going to pay him anyway.

Is that desirable? You tell me.

Yes. They’re gonna walk into 3 top tier classes and likely have a ton on board already for a 4th top class. It will be the easiest job to walk into. If anything it’s gonna make a coach look way better than he is unless it’s Dabo.

That's not true at all.

Bryant's last title was 1979. Stallings won in 1992. Saban in 2009.

That's 3 titles in a span of 30 years, or if you want to discount Saban's first and Bryant's last, a span of 28 with "only" 1 natty.

Impossible situation but will be very attractive. No one believes they will fail, but they likely will and will be hated for not being Saban. Yet they will line up for the oppotunity. Human nature and as it should be.
