It's hard to get excited when you know Bama or Clemson is winning the title every year.

The playoffs make the regular season feel like preseason.

The season use to be the good part and the bowls were for fun.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but it doesn’t seem like the west coast really care about college football. Are the colleges there friendly to football? Seems to me the PC crowd pushes it all out. I see a lot of instate talent go elsewhere.

The top 3 teams in the sec are bama, georgia, and lsu.

If Oklahoma or osu has a loss, lsu gets in with their only loss to bama

Oregon and USC have been competitive over the past 10-15 years.

Well, there hasn't been many marquee matchups so far, but once conference play starts, this should improve.

Over say a one loss Georgia?

And SEC fatigue is real. For the viewership for sure. And that affects money.

There is a decent chance the PAC-12 has a 12-0 team this year (my guess Wazzou or Utah).

Bama gets the reach around usually, but that's not going to happen for LSU.

And this is my opinion: if I were someone whose livelihood depended on how many people were interested in and wanted to watch the playoff, I'd definitely prefer only one SEC team.

To be honest I'd probably prefer only one Southern team (whether SEC champ or Clemson), with the other 3 being from the PAC, Big 12, and Big 10.

Cause in the end it is about eyeballs, and I think I'd get more with say Oklahoma/Ohio State/Wazzou (Pirate baby, story writes itself)/whatever from the South.

Whereas I just don't think some combo of say LSU/Alabama/Clemson/one other would interest the rest of the country as much.

There is a growing talent inequality that has resulted in CFB being very top heavy right now. There are a range of factors that have contributed to this, but skyrocketing recruiting budgets, the popularity of 7-on-7 leagues, the rise football academy high schools, and the ease of attracting attention online are all contributing factors to the talent concentrating with the top teams.

Right now -- we're talking maybe 10-15 programs with a pulse, and everyone else is playing at a lower level. The entire PAC 12 is at that lower level. Even USC, Oregon, and Washington can't keep up.

The last conference realignment really hurt football. It killed a huge number of old regional rivalries and games. Nobody gives a frick about Nebraska vs Maryland etc...

I think you’re right. It was funny hearing media dismissing people who said that could be an issue. Like new rivalries can just happen overnight.

Not enough marquee matchups. Look at how many people watched Texas vs LSU. This is one of the reasons the networks wants Notre Dame to be a real contender. They bring an audience.

One thing that would help is a name hire at USC. Someone who could actually bring them back to prominence. College football is better when USC is a top 8ish team. If there were more Oklahoma vs Bama type games. I would love to see Oklahoma vs Clemson play now. There needs to be some type of provision put in place to schedule games like this on the fly facilitated by the networks.

Even on a slate that on paper looked so bad like yesterday you can find competitive games that are fun to watch, but OP makes some valid points can’t deny that.

USC blew it by not hiring the one coach who could have turned that program around. They had him and he was all in but shrimp boat captains are hard to find in California..

I agree. We'll never again see the likes of Darrell Green, Jerry Rice, and Brady. The true iron men of the game.

Enforce recruiting rules and things may change a little.

Pittsburgh vs Penn State is an old rivalry between above average CFB history teams. Penn State joins the B1G and the rivalry suffers from less media coverage because Pitt is not P5. Pitt joins ACC and becomes P5. Both now P5 and played a competitive game yesterday. Series has now been cancelled with no games on the horizon. Somehow this is good for football?

MBA's took over Wall Street in the 80's and the US suffered. MBA's took over CFB in this generation and the moves have not helped the sport.

It ain't his fault for winning but Saban destroyed the sport and what made it great. The fact that 2 or 3 schools can cherry pick everyone they want anywhere they want has destroyed the parity in the sport. Its simply too predictable and no one enjoys watching Alabama play against mid majors til November.

I think expanding the playoffs could help a little. Give the lesser teams (that’s not Alabama or Clemson) more of a chance to make the post season.

Totally agree. The problem started with the 4 team playoff. Alabama and Clemson are guaranteed entry. Its pointless.
