All of the recent focus on head/brain injuries in Football is starting to keep parents from letting their kids even start playing football at a young age. Sports like Soccer and Golf are starting to see better athletes than ever because of this trend I believe.

Not sure it's yet in a death spiral, but interest is wanting a bit. I was kind of shocked to see all the empty seats in Williams-Brice yesterday. Their fans usually show up string, especially for an SEC opponent. This has been a growing issue at every school though, and a lot has to do with changes schools have made to the game day experience. It's no fun to drive 2 hours, park a mile+ from the stadium, sit in the stadium for a 4 hour game because of all the TV timeouts, then fight traffic for 3 hours to get back home.

The TV ratings are still very strong though. Schools have hinted at concerns over attendance, but they've gotten hooked to that TV money and not sure there's a solution that pleases all parties.

Playoff format has made a few super teams and everyone else. The attendance, support, ratings are all down. Those ridiculous "Who's In" commercials should be reduced to 4 mascot because we all already know "who's in".

But everybody wanted to eliminate the one thing that made college football unique...the bowl system.

Like Rome, the games have become the property of the emperor's, not the people. Until they address cost outstripping real wages of the average fan they soon find - too late of course - what boxing and equine sports learned when you forget the fans that got you there in the first place.

FIFY

For those not ole enough to remember, US polo drew 40,000 to 120,000 and now they would be lucky to draw 1,000. They went from marketing the masses to marketing the big dollar folks. History repeats itself if you watch and learn the first time.

College football is in decline. The South will be the last section to hang around. The Left Coast is done already....done.

What made college football great to begin with? The pageantry. Now, because every game is on TV and there has been a push to make money on every facet of the game day experience, it has gotten stale.

This right here!

Have an up vote.

Yeah, the book and documentary about football's issues with CTE came out six years ago. It makes you wonder if football is already starting to lose the best athletes to other sports.

I doubt it. What you will see is shortened careers. Instead of guys who play for damn near two decades, they’ll call it quits sooner.

My thoughts, many unoriginal:

Larger gap between haves and have nots at all levels of play.

most P5, let alone G5, teams have no hope of ever winning a title

The sport is no longer appreciated in many parts of the country;

Concussion issue

Games are often unwatchable and never in doubt

The games are catered to television

Attending a football game becomes a weekend affair, expensive, often with many headaches.

Very, very well put. The enormous gap between the very top teams and everyone else in terms of spending on recruiting, "totally not an assistant coach" analysts, etc., is a particularly huge factor

I agree with your statement. Just should have left Seattle out, because UW is there and if any pac12 school stands a chance year in and year out, it’s them lol.

USC always cycles around. College football is more fun when traditional programs like Texas, Miami or USC are competitive with the top SEC programs. Throw Florida State in there as well. Draws more national interest. Notre Dame and Michigan also

It's just you.

Find some other team than Bama to root for and you might find some joy, somewhere.

The last conference realignment really hurt football. It killed a huge number of old regional rivalries and games. Nobody gives a frick about Nebraska vs Maryland etc...

There has always been a separation between the top dogs and everyone else. I mean, the 70s it was Bama and USC. In the 80s, Miami, Nebraska and Notre Dame. In the 90s, Tennessee was the power. From 2003 to 2007 LSU was the top dog. From 2008 to now, Bama is king. Now Clemson has become a super power.

College football is cyclical in terms of who is the top team, and the same goes for everyone else. It will bounce back. People love football. It’s a great spectator sport. It might go through changes like it always has, but it’s going to stay.

This is a good point. I mean, why the frick is WVU in the Big 12? And Notre Dame needs to enter a conference.

What's weird is the lack of great programs in California. The player base alone should have each major program with at least a few 5* athletes.

Maybe the backlash from USC is partly to blame. They used to recruit absurdly, with few athletes but insanely high star averages.

It has to have peaked already so there's nowhere to go but down

Bama, Clemson, Oklahoma, georgia, lsu, and Ohio state are pretty much the teams that have a chance at the title.

In the next 5 to 8 years, there might be ten to twelve teams that have a legit shot at the title.

Most conferences outside these few teams are complete garbage.
