This. Bama will be back to good but not great status…and he’ll get run out of town for it.

So did Venables. That doesn’t mean much.

I think it’s a good hire. He’ll probably do well at Bama.

If I were an Alabama fan I’d have concerns over recruiting, especially if he’s bringing a lot of his Washington staff with him.

My honest opinion? Best of the realistic candidates this year, not a bad hire at all. When I say "realistic" I mean Kirby, Sark, Kelly, Day and even Kiffin are at places where they can recruit and win without the pressure cooker of following the goat. Lanning is obviously being well compensated at Nike U so that wasnt an option. The next 3 best (imo) were Deboer, Lieopold and Klieman with Deboer having the best resume.

If he gets enough time to settle in I think it could be really good. Thing is though he will have maybe a 3-4 year leash which may not work.

I think you overestimate Bama's financial ability to churn through coaching staffs that quickly. He will get 5 years minimum, and I don't think Bama is suddenly going to fall off the map with Deboer.

I think most of the SEC think it was an exceptional hire. We could not be happier .

DeBoer didn’t recruit as good as Lanning, Sark, or Riley. He was 6-0 against them. This obsession with recruiting rankings is really bizarre when you have a sample size like that.

Poor reading comprehension by you. Just said I believe he won't be able to recruit like Kirby and Saban. Most would agree with that assessment. I could be wrong.

I think he was the best realistic option out there.
He has won everywhere he has been, and he is walking in to one of the best rosters in college football.

Could be a similar dynamic to what happened after Bear retired.

Ray Perkins started a very average 8-4 but then went 5-6. Ooff! (he did beat AU though because of wrong way Bo and Robert McGinty)

It’s a good hire. My only concern is he has absolutely no ties to the south

This doesn't bother me. Auburn fans are quick to yap about Harsin. The obvious differences is that Harsin was a dumbass who rubbed everyone the wrong way...Auburn fans assume DeBoer will also. In addition, Harsin walked into an utterly dysfunctional athletic department and school administration with poor leadership and an absolute mess left by Gus. It's 180 degrees opposite of that for DeBoer.

That’s not gonna work in the SEC week in and week out. You should know better than that, and yes, that’s not only a small sample size, but it’s an irrelevant sample set altogether.

The SEC grind is different totally.

I think it’s a good hire. He’s replacing the GOAT, but you can’t just pick up the phone and order another GOAT. In his NAIA head coaching days, this guy had to personally stomp down divots on the field, had to double as assistant baseball coach one year and had to be the OL position coach one year along with being head coach because there was no one else, and he still won like an SOB. I’m excited about the prospect of what he’ll do with the keys to a Ferrari.

I want him to bring his whole fricking staff if he wants to. We've had constant turnover. If DeBoer has a staff that's so loyal to him, that's fine by me.

The guy strikes me as being very humble. Getting to know area high school coaches? Auburn fans are giddy and want to compare him to Harsin? Did Harsin have a Nick Saban to ask for advice and to pick up the phone or make introductions for him? Nick Saban is keeping an office at BDS, and I assure you it's not just to be for the Nick's Kids foundation.

I think this hire has a high ceiling potential. He has a great record and has gotten a team to the championship game. And won championships at lower level. Also has done more with lower recruiting classes.

At 49 he is not too young and has potential to stay around for awhile.

However, there are some potential risks. Only a few years coaching in BCS level. How will he do recruiting? How will he manage a larger school? How will he handle adversity? Losses? Boosters?

I don’t think he was a “safe” hire, g
But he was a great hire with potential risk.

So DeBoer is going to have Saban literally in the stadium watching over him?

What could possibly go wrong there…

I like the hire but if I was a bama fan I would have preferred Norvel, Kiffin or Lanning.

It's good. There will be a notable drop off from Saban though.
