-- The Tar Heels and Blue Devils have met at least twice a year since 1920.

-- The schools are located only 8 miles from each other's campus (USC and UCLA are only 10 miles apart).

-- UNC leads the all-time series, 142-115 (257 meetings).

-- UNC is 3rd nationally in wins; Duke is 4th nationally.

-- This will be UNC's 21st FF (#1), Duke's 17th (tied #3 w/Kentucky); UCLA is #2 (18) and Kansas is #5 (16).

-- UNC has won 6 national titles (was retroactively awarded the national title for 1924 unbeaten season in 1942 by the Helms Athletic Foundation); Duke has won 5 titles.

Combining for 11 national championships over the last 36 years, Duke and Carolina have captured 28% of the national championships, or greater than one every four years. Over the past 18 years, one of the two teams has been the AP pre-season #1 ranked team in the country 8 times (44% of the time). Since 1977–78, Duke or Carolina has been in the pre-season top three 28 times (70%). Over the entirety of the AP poll (the past 69 years), the teams have been in the pre-season top four 69% of the time. Over this same period, one has been pre-season #1 18 times, making it an almost 3 in 10 chance that Duke or North Carolina starts the year at #1 in the last 50+ years. One of the two teams has peaked at AP #1 in 32 separate seasons since 1977, a 7 in 10 chance that Duke or Carolina peaked as the top-ranked team in the country at some point in the season since 1977.

To me, here's the greatest fact about this most famous of all college basketball rivalries: UNC and Duke....have NEVER played each other in the NCAA Tournament, much less have never met in the Final Four -- until this year, 2022!!

TV ratings for this year's FF matchup of Duke & UNC could set all time records, especially in light of this being Coach K's swan song season and the intense white-hot rivalry this game already is.

Don't miss this game if you can help it!

Here's a fact: Kentucky has more titles than either of them and they can both kiss my arse.

Ehh I care. Really liked watching JJ Reddick play at Duke, actually did a paper on him in 6th grade. Didn’t care when we beat their arse that year though Always been a big supporter of Coach K, always came across as nothing but class during interviews and watching him coach Team USA. I hope the dukies can pull this one out and win a natty to send Coach K out the door on top.

It has become the greatest CBB rivalry and was always simmering but it never ratcheted up like now until about 85 or 86.

Duke had had some decent teams 64,66,68,78 all made the Final Four but they never won where on the other hand when Coach K replaced BIll Foster in 1980 the Heels had like 7 final fours and a couple titles. UNC still leads the series by a considerable margin but it was closed dramatically during Coach K's tenure.

This may be the biggest of them all though coming up. I imagine the ratings will be incredible.

What's more amazing is next fall will feature the first Duke-UNC game without either Dean Smith or Coach K on the sidelines since 1961.

This is the type of game that you turn down the volume very low and take a nap.

You cared enough to read and respond.

This is a far more interesting matchup than Arkansas vs NC would have been.

The most amazing thing about the UNC-Duke rivalry is how sedate it actually is. I lived in Raleigh for a few years, and I was expecting UNC-Duke to be the basketball equivalent of Alabama-Auburn. Instead I found that other than a couple of days before the actual games, no one talked about it. UNC-NC State was much fiercer.

There’s just nothing short of an actual war that has much hate than a good historic SEC rivalry

Corollary: A&M is 2-1 against them in the tournament (2-0 against UNC; 7 point loss to Duke)

Good thing for them we were snubbed.

Went to UnC@Duke in 2005.
Way different than the Iron Bowl.

Just as much intensity. Just as much hate.

But iron bowl is 90000 folks In an outdoor stadium.

Love both games. Both rank a 10 in rivalries.

Sec football is simply more.

As a native South Carolinian and Gamecock, screw them both, from the bottom of my heart.
