Has the Heisman Trophy lost its prestige?

Many people would say that it has.
Even though it's the highest honor in college sports, it really seems to have lost much of its luster over the years.
It's suppose to go to the most outstanding player in college football. But, if you look at the records, it nearly always goes to either the QB, RB or WR. The winner nearly always hails from a well-known program, too.
Did you know...that only 8 of the previous 74 winners....have gone on to be in the National Pro Football Hall of Fame? Also, many--MANY--have gone on to busted pro ball careers. Charlie Ward of FSU won the Heisman back in the early 1990's, but he never played a single down in the NFL.
Used to be that all we had was the Heisman and Lombardi Trophies. Now, we have...the Maxwell, Walter Camp, Doak Walker, Outland, Nagurski, Butkus, and on and on until now we have 18 awards given each year (sounds like it's trying to catch up with the number of bowl games).
All these other awards given out seems to have diminished the Heisman. Frankly, I don't really care anymore about who wins the Heisman.

Completely irrelevant.

Yes. Popularity contest , the trophy means nothing.

I stopped caring in 2008 when Tebow had the most first place votes and finished third because Mid West voters exploited the system and completely left him off their ballots for Bradford and Mccoy. Any award that can be manipulated like that isn't worth caring about. Was horse shite.

We told Herschel you think he's overrated. He was not pleased.

In an age of Diversity why is every one of them named after a white guy. At a minimum the RB trophy should be someone of color. No white guys winning that anymore.

Recent History has seen some who've won over way more deserving players. 2015 comes to mind. McCaffrey had an all-time type of season, breaking a Barry Sanders held record for yardage. Half the voters went to bed before he played though. Some years just haven't had that player that popped out, so a personality wins it by default, a la 2013 with Jameis.
It is a COLLEGE award, not a pro-preview award.

I haven’t watched a Heisman ceremony since the early 2000s. The trophy ceremony rivals the bachelor series finales—a ton of talk with little payoff. (Can y’all believe she picked Jed?! Ugh!)

It’s not fair to use their NFL career as a measuring stick. Super stars fizzle out while your 2nd stringer goes all pro. The Heisman is not about the best. It’s about the most talked about. I’ll give an example, it might be biased, but who can tell me that Tyrann Matheiu was not the best player in 2011? Who had a bigger affect on the game than that guy? The other finalists were great, but I don’t think they shined quite like Matheiu. But, he was a a DB. And that’s an award that goes to mostly QBs and RBs.

It basically excludes most elite running backs now because the best running backs play on teams where they split time. Gone are the days of Herschel or Bo carrying the ball 30 times a game. Now you have two or more backs on the same team each getting major yards. But as an individual, they can't stand out.

To be honest...
Heisman coached the SEC at Auburn and Georgia Tech
Heisman coached at SEC wanna be Clemson (never let a Tater wash clothes)
Heisman won a MNC at Georgia Tech (his only one)
They named a trophy after him...
Presented in New York City, New York...
This is the Heisman legacy in the SEC...
Alabama did not get a Heisman till 2009 - 1935 was the first award
Alabama got its second in 2015
Auburn did not get a Heisman till 1971
Auburn got its second in 1985, and third in 2010
Florida did not get a Heisman till 1966
Florida got its second in 1996, and third in 2007
Georgia did not get a Heisman till 1942
Georgia got its second in 1982
LSU did not get a Heisman till 1959
Basically the SEC got stiffed for the first 50 years and still has few relative winners compared to other power schools across the USA
7 Ohio State
7 Oklahoma
7 Southern California
7 Notre Dame
3 Michigan who was done when they let Michigan State join the B1G

It's a hype award and means nothing to me personally. I'm happy for the Alabama players that have won it, but in the end I couldn't care less about the trophy.
What matters is national championships.

It lost its credibility when Badger didn’t win it in ‘11.
It can possibly regain some credibility this year as long as my guy wins it.

Giving Peyton the Heisman would have made his choke job against Nebraska in the Orange Bowl look even worse than it already did. Ahman Green, not even being invited to New York, took that game personally.

It lost it's credibility with me due to two reasons.
First, it has become a popularity contest. It's not given always to the 'best player', it's given to the 'best player on a highly ranked team.'
Case in point, Darren McFadden was the best player in the country his junior year (save arguments for later), but they didn't give it to him 'because he was a junior.' So what do they do? Turn around the next year and give it to a Junior and McFadden is second for two years in a row.
Second, they rarely look past QB's and RB's. Very occasionally a WR, and even rarer someone other than those positions.

That left when Woodson beat Peyton Manning, for me at least

It's a QB MVP award now...
