you can't engage and hold a DB 10+ yards down the field on a passing play. SEC refs suck... a flag would have been thrown on that play every single time in an NFL game unless the saints were on defense

Jamming their receivers forces a DB to play man, and most DB's don't have the speed and/or size to match up with BAMA WR's.
More man = more defensive holding, interference calls, and DB beat over the top.

In all honesty as an LSU fan I'm looking at bama trying to figure out how to slow that offense down. Tua is generally very accurate and their WRs are so damn good.
I see why Aranada has introduced a lot of zone concepts early this year. It something that is out of the norm for LSU DBs. Usually they are talented enough to man up and the chips usually fall LSU's way. For example in the first half of the game with NW State LSU was playing zone concepts and NW State was dinking and dunking all the way down the field. It wasn't until Aranda switched to man that LSU shut down NW State's passing attack. LSU's DBs are simply more talented than NW State WRs.
But to play the bama's of the world and into the bowl season LSU will have to become proficient at zone concepts. They cannot be a one dimensional man on man defense. The only DB I have confidence in to man up with any receiver in the nation is Stingley. My confidence in Fulton manning up against bama's receivers (who is opposite of Stingley) is not that high and Fulton has the potential to be a late first rounder. Same with Delpit at safety.

I think you are exactly right - and honestly I think that approach is basically how you almost have to treat all teams these days (at least the ones with elite QBs and good schemes). Pick your spots for blitzes and havoc plays, but in general your goal is to keep guys in front, tackle and make them matriculate down the field. Don't give away chunk plays in huge open spaces.
Like you said, NFL model. You win games in the red zone.
That was Venables' approach. The crazy thing is he had never really used that type of approach consistently against an opponent before. He has a knack for totally changing schemes for a particular opponent or using different schemes throughout the game. He is the GOAT of Clemson coordinators.

I would think that this may be one of the "easier said than done" deals. Watching the Gamecocks /Bama game, at one point Bama had 3rd and 3ish. Bama converted with a pass to Jeudy. The replay though showed the real deal. Defense was playing up but the footwork of Jeudy had him off the db before the db could do anything to #4 and Tua lays a ball over the defender as Jeudy is heading to the sideline - easy 6 yd play and the db couldnt play any closer

Yep - it was an incredibly savvy move and they executed it to perfection. It's also got to be a very hard thing to decide to do because it has to knaw at you as a Coordinator because deep down you want to totally shut teams down, but sometimes it's not the right move.

Just thinking out loud; teams facing bama just have to approach the game the same as NFL teams approach games each Sunday. Match them score for score on offense and on defense keep them honest between the 20's by playing zone and play the law of averages for an offensive mistake. Then man up in the red zone if you have the DB talent and make sure bama leaves with a maximum of 3 points on each drive. In general I'm sure that will be the approach from aTm, LSU and Auburn.
In the NFL, there usually isn’t a huge disparity in talent on the lines.
If Bama plays clean, it’s going to be very hard for a team with inferior line talent to play with them. It was even before they had Tua and those receivers.
I’m really interested to see whether LSUs oline can block Bama this year and if our d line can get to Tua.

thats what sc did. problem is that when henry ruggs ran a slant they didnt want to commit.
you gotta be smart and realize that tua most often throws quick.
i say play back initially but come up a bit and clog the lanes.

Battles like Jeudy vs Fulton will be back and forth- but when you're asking your #4 guy to go stop Jaylen Waddle it's a problem. When you're asking your #2 guy to go stop Henry Ruggs it's a problem.
#4 is a challenge as is #3, but our #2 guy will thoroughly dominate Ruggs.

Fulton shut down any bama wr he’s on last year in man coverage but all of a sudden cause of one bad game you don’t trust him? Complete overreaction he’s still top 2 in the sec in PBU’s
