That was offensive holding by the WR on that play. Also known as Bama's perfect blocking technique.

One thing like jamming WRs won't stop a good passing attack. Stopping the WRs is done by confusing the QB. Disguising coverages. Zone is preferable against a QB with good legs so DBs can have "QB eyes" or "Zone eyes" instead of turning and running in M2M concepts.

Why am I not surprised MSU fans don't know how the game of football works?

a corner who can shut down 1/3 of the field, shrinking things (of which there are maybe 1-2 a year in CFB, if any)

Doesn't really exist anywhere. Even the best corners as said get beat often. Watson put up almost 300 yards against OSU in 2016 when OSU had Lattimore, Conley, Hooker and Ward (a backup) in the secondary.

Yep - and teams can just scheme them out of plays.

m glad you posted this gif because it's demonstrates bama's WR philosophy of clogging up the middle with crossing routes. They do this all the time. 8 did a good job of getting into a tackling position when Harris wasn't even his responsibility but did a terrible job of tackling. But Harris was open when the weak side LB for USC helped with the crossing Smith. This is a perfect example of why defenses need to stop bama's slot receiver from crossing. If that would have happened USC's weak side LB would have been able to focus on Harris.

Good post my man. I'm not great at picking up on those nuances in real time, but yeah, that would be a nightmare to try and decipher and cover for a defense.

Won't really help much when the refs let their OL block 10 yards down field

best I remember, Saban tried in vain to get the ncaa to return to the 1 yard downfield rule for linemen on a pass play. Auburn had beaten us in 2013 with a pop pass with linemen over 3 yards downfield. Another season Ole Miss had beaten us on a similar play. The ncaa kept the rule, and so what you going to do? Play by the same rules and like everybody else, take what you can get.

Or they can just hold them like Bama's cbs do. Either that or just shred that awful OLine and watch Tua look like an average QB at best.

I think another way to stop Bama or potentially anyone is to go back to the bend but don't break style. Play a bit softer until the offense gets to the 30 or so, then get much more tight on them. The game is a game of touchdowns now. Field Goals aren't going to win you a lot of games in 2019. Scores aren't 10-7 very often (it still happens occasionally) so you need to score 7 to win big games.

This.

And, until Bama's O-line comes together and they start running the ball when they want to run the ball (if that ever happens), it will be a good strategy. Right now, I fear this Bama team will put up a lot of yards, but without the points to match them, if they run into a good defense.

Your OL and RBs are. You haven't played anyone and it still shows.

I think a pair of safeties with range and ball skills is the most important equation.

I'd ask the corners to sit on the slants and intermediate rub routes, while the safeties would need to handle deep attempts periodically.

Of course, the pass rush has to limit the time of the play. Refs actually calling a consistent game along the line is always the struggle with Bama.
