I was suprised how often LSU didn't use the RB

We didn’t use him as much as we should have to counter what Venebles was doing. Every time CEH got touches he was effective and made Clemson’s front 7 think about him, yet we insisted on spitting him out wide leaving Burrow to be a sitting duck. Not sure if he’s still injured and they were protecting him but we usually see him featured more against good defenses. I really thought he could have an Alabama type performance in this game but he never got the chance.

I would disagree with this, due to the above as well as the insistence on running the bunch formations which made it incredibly difficult to see who was coming on the blitz. Seemed like nearly every time we came out in bunch it resulted in a sack.

The real difference in the game, ironically, was our defense. Without those stops in the 2nd half chance are Clemson seizes momentum and it would have been a close game to the end. Our D really played well and won’t get the attention it deserves. Some of that was Trevor missing some throws but I do t think Etienne would’ve been successful consistently enough the way our front 4 was playing.

Venebles is all he’s cracked up to be. I knew he would have something for us. It’s not so much that he confuses qbs (which he does) as he does the Oline. Our Oline was overwhelmed.

In the end Burrow is a transcendent player and this offense was a perfect storm. Clemson was by far the best challenge they have had all year.

. I expect our DL to be much improved next year. That is something that allowed Auburn to be effective against LSU

On the scoreboard, which certainly counts, Auburn was effective. If you watched the game, Auburn was actually ineffective between the 20s.

Not a knock, as Auburn was a great opponent against LSU.

Nice post, OP, and much respect to Clemson. Y'all played LSU very tough.

Tough to fault the OC here. Clemson actually had receivers running open, Lawrence just couldn’t hit them. It’s hard to go away from the pass when you’re getting open. LSU’s dbs tightened up in the fourth quarter, but Clemson was forced to throw by that point.

Even after that though we had chances. Like LSU missed a field goal to give us a chance soon after. And what did we do with it? A quick three and out

Clemson will be back, no doubt.

But hats off to LSU.

This may have been the best team I have ever seen. This team was special, and even being on the losing end, it was hard not to see how amazing they were.

Honestly, I think that both teams could have made better use of the RBs.

Agreed. It seemed LSU was content to sling it and wait to get CEH going late to milk clock.

Clemson seemed to panic when the LSU O got going and went away from Etienne. He was running hard and a long March running it would have been huge for Clemson around the middle of the 3rd. But they stopped feeding him.

In the end not sure it matters. That LSU team since Aranda got his defense going, with that offense, wasn't getting beat by anyone in college football.

Clemson got beat by a better team plain and simple. It happens you’re not always going to be the best team. As far as the game I thought it was weird that at one point both teams kind of got away from the run. But athletically LSU just too many weapons. Congratulations to them

Not very impressed by T Lawrence. Not very accurate.

Next to Burrow he looked pretty average.

Then again Burrow is the Goat. So...

After the First series by Clemson in the second half, Lawrence looked terrible, I mean throwing some wounded ducks, just wasn’t the same. Do t know if LSU’s defense made him move off his spots, or were just in his head, but didn’t look decent at all

I thought LSU would have run it more especially against the looks Clemson was giving them on D
Clemson D was very fast.
LSU never stopped attacking those corners and that was the difference.
Clemson will be back in playoffs next year along with Ohio St
LSU will have to replace a lot including the best QB in LSU history against another tough SEC slate. Doubt we make it back in playoffs next year but I'll enjoy this year for a very long time with the teams LSU had to go through to win it all!

Good point on the bunch formations. That was a tactical mistake, and I do think CEH could have gotten 4-6 yards consistently if they had run it more. It didn't seem to matter, because giving Burrow 3 cracks at a first down with 5-7 seconds in the pocket is not going to work. At some point the dam breaks.

As far as your defense, I think our biggest advantage against your D was our OL run blocking and we didn't attack it enough in the second half. Combine good coverage by your very talented secondary with Lawrence being off, and your D had a great performance.

I agree with the OP’s observations. Clemson had success running the ball. How LSU adjusted to that and getting some separation for them to have to abandon it some was key.

Huge turning point was that missed INT. It would have gotten real dicey. It wasn’t an easy play so no knock on the Clemson player, but huge moment in the game.
