I don’t think his wife knew it was open
But it was a pretty widespread rumor he was cheating on her after he got to Austin and started thinking he was bulletproof

What is it about coaches that are successful at Houston fall flat on their face at bigger schools?
Because at Houston they get to coach.
There’s a lot less meddling from big money types and a lot lower expectations because they don’t have the investment (polite word for arms race) issues of places like A&M and Texas. The head coach at Houston is probably not fending off invitations to speak at every football night in Texas.
Even recruiting is a lot easier because you won’t be accused of letting the house burn if you’re not landing 10 too 300 croots.
All that crap adds up, and it will mess with your character if you can’t get up on the wave fast.
Even if you can, you just get warped and fed up with it.
Just ask Mack Brown.

Guy is (was) a hot mess. I think he's a good coach in a vacuum and a very smart guy, but he's a douche bag and his personal life was off the rails apparently. It made him less effective than he should've been.

Well, he sure has had a downfall, from being the Texas head coach to being fired as FAU head coach. Like I don't think that anybody outside of Florida had even heard of FAU before their Final Four run.
Anyway, when you're fired as head coach at a program as small time as FAU before you even complete your second season at FAU, that means that your head coaching career is over.
However, it's also pretty telling that he couldn't even get an assistant job under a head coach who's on a less of a hot seat than Mike Norvell is.

I thought he was a better coach than Charlie Strong and Sarkisian but that job was too big for him

Herman was fired during his second season on November 18, 2024, after starting the season 0–6 in conference play and 2–8 overall. In just under 2 full seasons at FAU, his overall record was 6–16, and 3–11 in conference play.
Tom wasn't a terrible coach...
