There are games every year where you realize that you are playing a team that is roughly equal to your own.
Those games break on a few key plays or one great player just taking over.
Tebow didn't have enough that night by himself and I never thought that Florida squad ever reached their potential. I suspect the character issues behind the scenes and rot that usually accompanies Meyer after a few years had set in and they just didn't have that extra gear like they had in the past.

Being at both 08, 09 Championship game, I remember towards the end of the 08 game Meyer staring the Bama sideline down, pumping his fist, clapping his hands, both hands raised in the hair, rubbing it in with that turtle smile of his.
I was hoping Saban would return the bragadocious move the next year but not his style.
He did break Meyer's heart & spirit that night.
UFA's run was over.

I was surprised. I was cautiously optimistic at our chances to win. I had moments I had just thought we would lose and tried to prepare myself for it. The previous 10 years kind of left me scarred. And Tebow had this crazy ability to just take over and will his team to win. Florida had never had an undefeated season and the drive to do that I thought would be difficult to overcome. Also we had struggled in several games that year that we had no business struggling in(ut and au for example).
Was shocked at how dominant we were. I cant even pretend I wasn't. And I didn't feel relief until that 4th down that Florida wasnt able to convert in the 4th close to the endzone.

I was certain that Alabama would win. That Florida team was overhyped a lot.

I expected us to win since Percy Harvin was out(or limited, can't remember) for the game because of injury. I didn't expect us to dominate like we did though.

Percy Harvin was out for the 2008 game. He was already gone by 2009.

That's right. Man, my memory has gotten so bad in recent years.

I was very nervous about this one. I gave Bama a 50-50 shot after the year before. But they came out rock solid and made Tebow cry.

Or if you were expecting to win
I thought it would be a tight game. That was a great UF team, but after the game the prior year, I thought we had a good chance in 2009.

Hard to remember that far back. Felt like we let the 08 game slip away but that was a great UF team and Bama was still learning how to win and finish.
Add a bit more talent to Bama and another year of experience and it made the difference.
Back then, UF was the hunted. Bama's made no secret that they had Florida circled the whole year.
This was the game that broke Urban Meyer.
More surprising to me was letting Texas hang around with a backup QB.

Heh not surprised an Arkansas fan from that year would say that. Didn't you guys almost beat Florida in 09 except maybe for a blown call?

To be honest, I thought we were going to win all the way, the 2008 and 2009 Bama teams, with the exception Florida the previous year had shown they could play with the big boys and I felt they would win. I definitely had apprehensions but thought they would win going away.

I thought Alabama had that game circled for awhile obviously. You could tell they overlooked Auburn the week before and nearly blew their Natty chance losing to them.

There was a play where Tebow got out in open space and if Rolando McClain (best LB Saban ever had IMO) hadn’t got that open field tackle, he would’ve gone for about 20 more yards probably. After he made that tackle, as weird as it sounds, I knew we had that game won.

Didn't florida finish the year 13-1 with a beatdown on a very good Cincinnati team in the bowl game?

2008 Alabama had no business keeping that SECCG as close as they did. Florida was dominant after they lost to OM.
2009 Alabama was better and Florida was definitely not the same team. Two weeks before the game I thought Bama wins by 10 points at least. Then rivalry week happened. Alabama escapes JHS with a win, Florida demolished FSU. My thought was did Alabama just overlook Auburn? (To an extent, yes. Auburn also pulled out a few tricks and McElwain continued to run Mark Ingram even though it was clear Auburn was willing to let anything happen except getting beaten by Ingram.)
Florida also ran that option where Tebow could keep the ball, pitch it to a RB, or toss a shovel pass to Hernandez. They ran that several times against FSU and everytime it was a big play it felt like.
Game day in Atlanta. Still felt like we would win. Bama kicks a FG on the opening drive still felt good. Florida gets the ball, first play is that option. 2 yard pass to Hernandez. That was when I was convinced we would win. The defense was clearly ready. Two quick in-completions and a punt later Alabama drives right down the field and goes up 9-0 Sealed it for me. Yes, we traded scores for the rest of the first half, but the first two drives of the second half sealed it. Florida goes 3 and out, Bama socres another TD and started planning their trip to Pasadena.
Hell, Alabama's last scoring drive was 17 plays, 88 yards and took 8:47 off the clock. The final drive Alabama took over with over 7 minutes left on the clock and ran it out. You couldn't ask for a better second half. 4 posessions, 2 TDs, 1 punt, and just squeezing any drop of life out of your opponent as you bleed the clock to 0:00.
God I need to rewatch this game soon.

Yeah but remember McElroy had broken ribs. If that game had become a shootout he probably gets benched for AJ, who had redshirted up until that point. When Bama took a 24-6 lead at halftime it was clear Alabama was going to try and just run out the clock in the second half. To Gilbert's credit, had did make a couple plays right in the middle of the second half that resulted in two long TD passes to Shipley, but the defense took over after that. 3 straight turnovers leading to two TDs and then the final kneel downs. Gilbert was 15/40, but he did make those 15 count

How suprised were you that Bama beat a great Florida team in dominating fashion?
Not that surprised because it was a revenge game from 2008 result.
