The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama certainly has subject-matter jurisdiction on the basis of diversity of citizenship. I also understand the lawsuit revolves around a 1st amendment claim, too, so there’s the federal question. I think most courts would also find that personal jurisdiction exists because LSU is an active member of the SEC, participates in SEC meetings, etc. with the SEC being based in Alabama. Seems like a pretty clear instance of having sufficient minimum contacts in Alabama.
The next question would be venue. This is where LSU/LSU officials might have an argument, since the recruiting activities at issue were carried out in Louisiana. That said, the rules at issue were established in Alabama. I can see both sides of this argument, and perhaps this would be grounds for removal to a federal court in Louisiana. Like I said, I can see it going either way.
1. The case is not based on diversity jurisdiction because there is no diversity. SEC is unicorporated association which means it takes the citizenship of all its member institutions.
2. You are correct that it is federal question under First Amendment.
3. I see where you are going with personal jurisdiction, but LSU cannot be sued in different state based on the 11th Amendment.
4. Goin back to PJ, how does Alabama have personal jurisdiction over Kiffen, Wade Rouse, and Verge Ausberry? I don't think it does.
5. Venue is probably a tougher call, but most of the alleged conduct occured in Louisiana, and all of LSU witness reside there. Greg Sankey just proved it is not inconvenient for SEC officials to travel to Louisiana.

That’s a good question. I would assume the argument would be that they all participate in SEC meetings, decision making, activities, etc. when acting in their official capacities, including coming to Birmingham for some of those things. For Kiffin, there might also be an argument that he actively recruits in Alabama, which is part of his official duties as the head coach of LSU, including coming here to visit recruits.
